I'm thinking about finally dumping digital cable and getting a satellite dish. Is this the best idea? If so, what's the best dish company to go with?

I really can't offer an opinion since I've only ever had cable. Although after getting my cable bill, I sure would like to find a less expensive alternative. But I seem pretty much tied into the cable now. Have cable phone, cable internet, and cable tv. What a pain to switch all those things.

In 10 years, homes will have fiber direct to the house.

We just switched to cable everything, or are scheduled to.

If anyone is interested. www.vonage.com is much cheaper for internet phone and allows faxes where TWC says you must purchase a dedicated fax line. $24.99/mo unlimited. I pay the $14.99/mo for 500 minutes. I only use it as a fax line.

I think people get confused over the "cheaper" alternative. Dish/Direct aren't that much different price-wise than Cable is monthly. Does Dish/Direct have cheaper packages? yes, but they are normally WAY WAY fewer channels. Also it may change what local channels you view due to your location. Furthermore if you want multiple TVs in multiple locations there's an extra $5 per TV or more if you want a DVR. Cable allows basic analog cable anywhere you want. Admittedly if you want more digital boxes that costs more, but a lot of people don't take that into consideration. I'm not saying Dish is any better or worse than Cable, but from a savings aspect there is really very little to no difference.

I agree, that by far is the best deal going on IP phone service. I'm highly considering the switch.

My DirecTV package is far cheaper than the Cable alternative (~$20+ per month less).
That said, while I love my DirecTiVo, I'll be switching to cable soon as Windows Media Center can by my DVR for cable. The main reason? I want local HD channels, and DirecTV is dumping TiVo before they bring local HD channels in from the satellite (I can get them today with antennas, but that sucks).

If it's not TiVo, it doesn't matter.
