we have an old dell, Win 98, 256K ram. Its fine for the time being, so no smart-ass comments.

After my son gets on line and does his "Neopets" thing, say a few hours later, I'll surf the net, try to anyway. Video is like sloooww motion, almost stop action, and Media player is always fucking up (quicktime is ok). So I'll reboot the computer and then everything works fine.

I use Cleanup about every other day, I use Adaware once a week, I have loaded spywareblaster, kill2me (its gone), and spybot S&D. What can I do to see what is consuming all the resources? Also have Norton AV and Internet security.

    thanks

It's probably just Win98 gasping for air. WinXP manages memory much more effenciently, thus requiring less restarts.

    Could be heat too.

Nothing stutters like a hot pc/vid card.

yes. I use Cleanup to take care of that. Helps some but not totally the issue.

no this is pretty much the stuff said before. A total reformat w/ Win98 might help for a little while, but in time it'll start again, and that's only if it isn't the overheating issue as earlier mentioned. Depending on how long it has been running though I tend to agree with Math's initial assessment.

The only thing that leads me to believe its not that, if it were getting that hot, generally the PC will reboot automatically.
