If that's the case why did we cut Jake?

We are going to have to sign a back-up QB anyway.

maybe they think they can find a backup at less than Jake's salary. a net savings.

Nope. Jake's salary was $1.5 million, I think. 2nd year of an extension is usually a very cheap salary.

I don't think this is about preparing for a lockout. I think it's an unprecedented opportunity to drop dead money - that's all. Zero cap penalties to get out of contracts.

I don't know how many of these moves will actually 'save' money.

Does anybody know the 2010 salaries of:

    Delhomme ( i think 1.5 million )
    Kemo
    Diggs
Johnson ( definitely dead money drop, they whiffed on that )
    Lewis

I believe the Observer stated with all the cuts the saved 12 million. Basically what they owed Jake. I thinks Jake's hits were somewhere around 3.5/4.5/5.0 give or take a million.

Kemo had 2 million the rest less than that.

they can still find someone cheaper than that.

I don't think we'll sign a quality backup qb for less than 1.5 million. We might, but I'm not so sure.

If we saved $12 million by cutting:

    Vet QB
    Starting DT
    Starting DT
    Starting OLB
    Special teamer

I'd be surprised how much we actually save when we sign guys to replace them.

I thought Lewis had some crazy roster bonus due.

Anyway, It'll be interesting to see who they grab and what it costs. I don't see this as much of a cost cutting move this year as a dead money purge in a capless situation. I may be wrong.

the net money savings might not be great, but the cap savings are huge. That's a part of all this, too. And most of this is on money that had already been paid, Jake aside.
