Care to explain what you are talking about in English? 52b cabinets, vrads, and batteries, that's awesome.

there's all kinds of telephone equipment cabinets around. most are on the side of the road, some are underground. att's uverse uses vrads (not sure what the acronym stands for, its on teh googles). the vrads are getting their own cabinets, much like adsl did when it got started up. anyways, the cabinets have their own battery backup incase of power outage. apparently some of these batteries have been blowing up.

    here's a 52b cabinet (they've got quite a few different ones now)

So, U-verse is another combo package of internet + TV + phone. Basic packages include Internet + TV, Phone is extra ($30 for 1000 minutes, $40 for unlimited).

Internet speeds look great for upload (1mb/s or faster), mediocre for download (1.5mb/s-3mb/s in the standard packages, 6-10mb/s available).

The HD channel line-up is really weak compared to DTV HD content...

    $84 base package (200 channel standard plan with 3 receivers, one a DVR) + $24 (HBO/Cinemax package) + $10 (HD package) + $5 (upgrade to Pro Internet package (1.5mb/s download to 3mb/s download) = $123/mo.

    Nothing to write home about.

    My current DVR runs Linux.
I use what works. I just happen to think that Microsoft stuff in general is more cost-effective and low-maintenance than hacked together solutions or high-dollar solutions. But not always.

    or, in short:
