This should be the running NFL Draft/Offseason thread, in which some of the vital draft discussion will turn.
Don't worry about size, heft, etc., this'll be the main draft subtopic for a while. As well, often there will be links added to other pertinent threads, such as these:

    NFL Draft: Cornerbacks

    NFL Draft: Linebackers

    NFL Draft: WRs

    Needs:

CB-hopefully this gets addressed both in the draft and in FA

WR-a guy (maybe two) who can stretch the field

OLB-both a WLB and a SLB that can develop/start should Morgan go down again with his yearly injury and 'Spoon is moved to MLB while he's out and some one competent to backup Fields.

G-both starters are UFA and even if we sign them we need an eventual replacement for Donnalley (It's not going to be Nelson)

S-some one that's ready to start should Grant jump ship or is at least good enough to push him should he stay

Drafting as low as we now appear to be, it's going to be hard getting good talent after Day One. Those three picks are going to be huge and mistakes we can't afford to make (see Nelson).

This is a good corner draft, and at the same time, free agency may be a little stronger as far as corners go. We'll see.

I think the corner/WR needs are obvious. Safety is something I'd rather see us get a FA for.

    For the draft, other needs..

Linebacker is next in line as a major need. In a perfect world, we can get a guy with some versatility about where he can play.

We need a Tackle. I'd like to see us take a DE for our rotations. I don't know if we can keep Wallace and/or Pittman.

Get the above taken care of before we start looking for our next 3rd strong QB.

i'm looking for a spry moose type. good size, good hands, good blocker with some RAC ability.

AND HE MUST LOVE THE END ZONE.

My hope is that they don't go into this draft locked onto certain people (regardless of round picked or picks given up for them) like they did this year. Drafting as late as we will be, we can't afford that. Piper, about that tackle-would you have a problem grabbing Wharton from USC in the 4th were he's presently projected? Pretty good footwork for the passing game and a better than average run blocker.

Apparently he’s a leader with great work ethic and he’s smart. He is critiqued for needing to improve as a run blocker from one of my sources and for not being very strong at the point of attack. I would imagine that the weight room and good coaching will help him over those hurdles. More than one source projects him to move to guard but that would be a plus if he’s versatile enough to cover both positions eventually. Seems like a very solid 4th round pick to me.)

From all I can gather there are two decent possibilities for ya in the ’04 draft, unless you want to wait for Young to come out of his shell and complete a spryness course. Jenkins is apparently a little slower little bigger version of Clayton and would be your best bet for all of the above, but it would take our 1st to get him. I would suggest a small step down to hometown kid Cotchery and he could be had in the 3rd but he might get snagged right in front of us since we should be picking so late. I’d love to have him.)

    Wide out angst

All of the sudden WR is not looking all that great beyond the top 5 or 6. Is it just me or is this years crop looking a little skimpy for 1st day quality starting WRs?

I’m starting to warm up a lot to Darling. One mock puts him as the 4th best WR (behind the Williams’ twins and Clayton). He goes ahead of Woods as a more dangerous deep threat in the NFL due to a little more speed than Rashaun. However there is still the twin-death scare and he might be there for us due to that.
I like Jenkins too but he is not looking like the deep threat that we really need. Apparently he ain’t got the speed to be the homerun hitter at the next level. He is a BEAS though and will make one hell of a chain moving redzone threat.
Evans apparently has a little off the field baggage though I do not know what it is. He has also had major knee surgery already and that is more of a concern than Darling’s twin bro IMO.
Berrian is apparently as fast and dynamic as any WR in this class and has added value as a return man. He apparently hasn’t lost a step after his knee surgery but that is a big concern nonetheless and I’d rather we pass on both he and Evans.

In the 4th either Watts, Henderson, BJ Johnson, or maybe Parker might still be there and/or we can get a more proven deep threat in free agency . . . nuts.(

For what its worth, Evans is completely recovered from that knee injury. Forget about it. And its rare to see so much mass from a 5'11 frame.

True that he doesn't fit what Larry alluded to. A bigger reciever that we seem to like who can get in the end zone. Other than Berriman, a project who needs to get stronger, I don't know if any of those bigger guys are real burners.

Dervey Henderson has some speed and has caught 10 TD passes this year. And that's opposite Clayton. That's be a little too much repeating effort with Smith though.

    Darling?

Yeah T, that would be a good target. He or a guy like Starks. i haven't really done a whole lot on Tackles, but those two are the type I have in mind. I like Starks on the right side particuarly.
