It's the quiet part of the season so I had an idea:

Playoffs- winning record and you're in:

8-8-1 and above book your hotel

Yes this means there will be variable amounts of playoff teams each year

The conferences exist for scheduling only- once january hits it's open seeding on a two sided bracket

The nfl is going to get a 16 team playoff* eventually- whether that 50% of the league or the retarded euro division idea is in place by then is anyone's guess.

*Side theory the 16 team playoff will have "at large" bids decided by committee so instead of a winning team that would miss out in the current system being let in the big market teams would get a free advance- permanent play off places for NY/DAL/LA/CHI essentially.

In my NFL eutopia I'd retract the playoff field to five teams per conference. I'd keep the automatic playoff spot for division winners unless you could bump a sub .500 division winner for an above. 500 wildcard (which you almost certainly could). Then I'd reseed based on overall record.

This guarantees quality while preserving fairness.

Your theory of expansion is way more realistic, though. The NFL will never subtract games. Ever. They may be close to max compacity, but they're never going backwards.

Expanding the playoff field is a good way to get revenue while not making the regular season an 18 game grind for everyone. If the streaming only playoff game works out this year you also get to give streaming services a piece of wild card weekend- hell the amazon game might be watchable then.

Playoffs aside...the NFL missed out on a ton of money by not making the NFL Ticket ala carte.

Many would pay $10 a game to watch their team...but have no interest in paying $250 a year to watch them all.

Like the idea prez but they'll never do it. Something WILL be changing in the future playoff format, and like the college playoff the majority of us will not like the change.

Would love the 10 bucks a game plan coach. I'm interested in trying the NFL PLUS Premium this season. Whenever you have to miss a live game you can just replay it and breakdown every play of any game you want whenever you want to watch it.

$90 more to get out of bad local games if you're already paying sunday ticket to watch the panthers in another state isn't that much. As someone whose local markets are #1 Cowboys, #2 Broncos, #3 Cardinals that is.

I'm not sure how long college lasts as it's currently construed before a superleague happens. You can get roughly 16 teams from where they are now... 12 game season plus playoffs- only downside is as I noted in the NFL- some big names are going to want protection from their own incompetence.

The NFL will also have to reckon with the fact that they are going to have to build their own minor league or merge with the colleges/high schools sooner or later.
