A ton depends on how he does next season. He's got a great arm but needs a lot of coaching up. If we like him, he'll cost us $18M in 2022, and then he will be a UFA. So if he does well enough in 2021, I can see them extending him a few years to try and keep him relatively inexpensive.

"Darnold has one-year remaining on his rookie contract, in addition to his fifth-year option. For former top-10 picks like Darnold, the fifth-year option is equivalent to the salary of the league’s transition tender, which is about $25 million. That number becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the league year in the fifth year of Darnold’s contract, which would be March 2022."

Of course this was as a Jet.

Ok, I thought I read $18M but I could be mistaken. I did read that we're planning to pick up his fifth year option though, but I don't know if that is official yet or just something Fitterer told a reporter.

I read like May 5th his 5th year becomes officially picked up.

So if we get to pick number 8, and there is one good QB left on the board, the Lions are set to take him at 9.

    What do we do?

Supposedly, the Pats and Redskins are looking to move up and this might be their shot to jump in front of Detroit.
    Do we stay put?

trading down depends on who is there and what you get- I wouldn't trade down if a top ot is there might be tempted by a wr but otherwise drop back get at least a 1st and second this year and second next year to even out Darnolds cost. Tepper probably overrules any trade down if a QB he likes is there- and the Dan Snyder comparisons can start in earnest.

If it were the Redskins, I think we could get their 1st next year, and 3rd and 4th this year. Doubt we get the haul you mention.
    But who knows.

If Sewell is there then we make sure we get him.
