They sign them based on how they think they will play. Otherwise Cam would have been here last year.

Jets Get Teddy to tutor Jets new QB Wilson, Jets also get Panthers 5th round pick in the 2021
    Panthers Get Darnold

Panthers trade down to #12 w SF who takes Lance
Panthers pick up an extra 3rd.

At 12, Panthers take Slater or top CB

We take Mac Jones at 12. If we can fix Darnold then he will be worth a lot, if he can't at least he keeps Jones from having to start right away.

    I'd be okay with that.

They are both about 6'3", so similar in that respect.

Mac is smart, but not nearly as much of a threat to run. Darnold is a bit more mobile, but playing in NY, he probably had to do that or die

I don't like giving up the draft capital to move up to 3rd in the draft to get someone who might or might not work out in the NFL.

I just want to stay at 8 or drop back if the right situation presents itself

Mac Jones on a rookie contract with an upgraded offensive line is sounding pretty good to me. He probably shouldn't be a top 10 pick, but I'd rather overspend on a QB that way.

I've never been a big Darnold guy. He's a poor man's Jameis Winston. He's been a big part of why the Jets have sucked.

If a quarterback needs a good team in order to look good, he's not a franchise quarterback. I know people have stretched the franchise quarterback label to the point where it basically means starting quarterback, but it's supposed to mean this guy will be elite no matter what's around him. Maybe Darnold can be a starter but there's no evidence that he's anything more.

    Understood.
I was just playing devils advocate. Thinking also about players like Tannehill who looked like warmed over nothing, for quite a few years in Miami. Then he won Comeback player of the year in Tennessee. That is where the "never know" comment came from.

Tannehill might be a decent comparison, but I'm not convinced Tannehill is a franchise quarterback himself, even though analytics nerds seem to think he's become one. He's had one of the easiest jobs in the NFL over the last 1.5 years.
