Hey, everybody! I hope your Friday is going well!

I've managed to catch all of the game, albeit in increments, and I've listed some of my thoughts/observations regarding the Panthers performance last night.

    Here they are:

    - The Panthers website described Will Grier's performance as "efficient". He had a 63.8 passer rating, against third and fourth stringers, and vanilla, preseason defensive coverages. That is not efficient. I liked the 20 yard scramble - it ended up being only one of two explosive plays the Panthers generated all night - but overall, he's clearly a work in progress. Allen, on the other hand, looked composed and actually efficient. I liked that he was able to sidestep multiple pressures allowed by our second string offensive line. He was a little bit better than the 1/5 on 3rd down stat would indicate, since Aldrick Robinson - who is awful - dropped one conversion, and another "failed" conversion set up a 4th and inches conversion (his bootleg). We seem to have the quarterback depth chart correct, at least for now, but it's obviously very early.

    - Greg Little needs to pick it up. He gave up two pressures to Leonard Floyd's backup, both of which would have been sacks if not for good awareness and nifty movement by Kyle Allen, and I've seen him struggling all camp against our backup edge defenders, particularly Haynes. It's quite troubling that he's struggling so badly against speed rushers, specifically. Handling those types of rushers is supposed to be his strength. Quite frankly, he looks like a 3rd stringer right now. I don't love the idea of Williams playing left tackle, and Van Roten is, at best, an average guard, so the left side of the line might actually be more problematic than we imagined back in April. So, if Little would stop being so shitty, it would be ideal.

    - Chicago had four explosive plays, compared to two from Carolina. That leaves us -2 in the explosive play differential. Y'all know I'm a stickler for this stat. It's very hard to win games nickel and diming your way down the field, while the opponent is getting big ole' chunks of yardage. Granted, our "starting" receiving corps last night was a motley crue. Robinson and Mickens were each 1 of 4 in converting targets into receptions. Brutal. It won't help Mickens' case that Godwin looks like a god damn natural returning punts. His moves and his patience setting up blocks are laudable.

    - Chicago ran 54 plays of offense. Defensively, we lined up in a 4-2 nickel presentation on 33 of those 54 plays. We lined up in a 3-4 presentation for the other 21 plays. It's interesting to note that we did occasionally play our base defense against their 3WR sets, which is something we've done in the past as 4-3. I was wondering how we would present this look in a 3-4. What we did, was bring a safety down over the slot receiver, and effectively play a cover 3 defense. This is different than what we used to do in a 4-3, when we would just flex out Thompson into the nickel position, and we would often play cover 2 or cover 4. It's going to be a more predictable strategy in a 3-4, so I wouldn't expect to see this wrinkle very much against Drew Brees.

    - Jared Norris is absolutely abysmal as a linebacker, especially in coverage, but he's a solid special teamer, so it will be interesting to see if he becomes this year's Hankton. Carter and Smith look much more natural in space than Norris, but neither guy seems to have the same level of special teams cred. I'm betting on a superior linebacker getting cut for the special teams guy, because that's typically how it goes when the rubber meets the road on cut day. Bryan Cox appears to have a leg up on Obada for the same reason.

    - Haynes' effort on that wham block that sprung Montgomery's touchdown was pathetic. If you expected me to lavish praise on a guy for teeing off on the world's worst offensive tackle, then you obviously don't know me well enough. I like the speed rush, be he needs to work on his run defense if he's going to carve out a meaningful role this year. I agree with Bellington's assessment of Christian Miller. He looks like Wes Horton-type roster filler, so far.

    - Slye. Nice game. Nice leg. Our camp leg is better than any kicker competing for the Bears job lol. I hope Graham recovers from his "tenderness" soon.

    - The Special Teams appear to be extremely well coached this year. The guys on punt return did a good job of avoiding penalties. I can tell this has been a point of emphasis. Good work.

    - Holyfield had 11 touches for 39 yards, against 4th/5th stringers. So, no.

    - I've already mentioned Ron's new watch in a separate thread. That's good shit. I'm happy to see that he's been working on his time management.

I can't think of anything else.

    - Oh, and no linebacker can cover Ian Thomas on a crossing route. I wish Norv would exploit this like it's a money play on Madden 05. Keep doing it until they put a DB on him, and then your can run the ball against an extra DB.

    You're welcome.

DM me on how you wanna handle it. I want to make sure you’re getting credit for the work, or that I am altering the copy so it attributes you as the analyst.

You can copy and paste it and put my name on it. That should be fine. If there's a different way you'd like to do it, that's fine as well.

Efe Obada was also MIA. I looked at the gamebook and he played a LOT more than I remembered, but he was late to every play and got no tackles. Did you notice anything about him B&B?

No. He doesn't fit this new scheme at all.
