Let me try to reason it this way: they already mug in the EZ to prevent a TD. Even though most of the time teams punch it in, it works sometimes. Can be very effective with a seconds left in the game situation when a TD is needed (and with refs nowadays, it may not even get called [Luke/Pats]). Kind of a no brainer for the defender.

Asuring an incompletion on a deep ball, and giving up only 15 yards for it (at worst) = good idea in many scenarios.

Edit: and really, no one has ever seen a beaten defender tackle a WR, with all the football people here watch? I sure have, though I can't cite a specific instance from memory.

A universal 15 yards would be fine. Giving the receiver the benefit of the doubt that he would actually catch the pass has always bothered me.

I like the idea of moving the extra point back.

There's also my old-school old-geezer mindset of if you don't want to get interfered with, do a better job getting open. WRs constantly bitching for interference flags is one of my biggest peeves.

The sling it deep and hope for a PI isn't something that I like being part or the game, no doubt. But letting the defender mug with relative impunity isn't an ideal solution. I think doing one or the other leaves something to be desired, hence my original suggestion for degrees. But then that gives more weight to the refs' judgment, which is all over the place already. They don't ask any of us for our opinions anyhow.

As an old school type, I don't like too many of their recent rule changes in the first place. The fewer changes, the better afaic.

If it were up to be, DBs would be allowed to mug as much as they wish. But I believe changing it to a 15 yard penalty is a good compromise.

Are they addressing kickoffs, seriously? That's my biggest NFL pet peeve. it's become a boring formality, just like the PAT. Do something with both to spice up the game.

They're trying to make both so boring you don't even notice when they're gone.

One defender gets to use a tazor and the offensive team has to figure out who has it
