    23. Carolina Panthers (5) 2012 Run Block Rankings: 10 (Pro Football Focus), 30 (Football Outsiders)
2012 Pass Block Rankings: 27 (PFF), 21 (FO)

    LT: Jordan Gross
    LG: Amini Silatolu
    C: Ryan Kalil*
    RG: Geoff Hangartner
    RT: Byron Bell
    Super Sub: T/G Garry Williams

Overview: Although Kalil has been Carolina's stalwart center since breaking into the starting lineup in 2008, he is listed as a "new starter" here because he missed all but five games last season with a Lisfranc fracture. Hangartner slid to center and guard Jeff Byers was forced onto the first string with largely disastrous results.

Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams slugged their way to a combined 4.03 YPC average while Cam Newton's sack rate rose from 6.3 to 6.9 percent of his dropbacks. Kalil's return will help the up-front cause, but Hangartner is still penciled in at right guard and Bell graded out 60th-of-80 qualifying tackles in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings. Cap-strapped Carolina didn't have financial means to address the line much this offseason. The only notable reinforcement is fourth-round guard Edmund Kugbila, a project from Valdosta State.

ETA: there's a pretty big disparity in the run blocking rankings for PFF and FO...no idea why

FO measures are pretty sure all stats based (yards gained against down and distance) PFF is grading each player on a per play basis then aggregating it.

At least I think that's how they do it can't research right now

Yeah, and all those sites are deeply subjective, which is why I don't put much value in them.

Most of us watched nearly every play last year and know where we were weak, stats or not.

Edit: know might be too strong, les go with have a pretty good idea instead.

I'd like to get Winston on the team. If Gross is gone after this season then at least have one guy you can bring back.

THAT'S OLD STUPID MENTALITY OF THE PAST DID YOU EVEN SEE MONEY BALL??! EMBRACE THE STATS!!

    /footballSABRpeople.

sidenote from that PFF has sold some of their stuff to NFL teams and really prides themselves on it as proof of legitimacy ignoring the fact that NFL teams routinely do dumb things

Stats have their place, problem is that place is usually in an argument, cherry picked for best effect.

Sounds like a political argument where both sides are getting their info from Fox News and CNN
