I'm not saying the Panthers should emulate the 49ers, just that there are teams that still have success without going 100 MPH.

I'd rather get better, not faster.

    fair enough.

dont necessarily think wanting a defense as effective as the niners necessarily means i want emulate them...but they are kinda stacked at all 3 levels of the D, while we are only really stacked at one.

There's this misconception that the niners have a great secondary

They're about to start Craig Dahl at safety if something doesn't happen there.

They need a FS and Whitner's coverage skills have always been questionable at best. It's a secondary that can look bad when that pass rush disappears.

I see that more of a reflection of their O than D. They were a run based team, 2 TE sets that prior to Kap arguably had one of the most conservative QB's in the league. Keeping your O on the field means it keep theirs off it (see first half of second Panther/Falcons game). It also keeps the D fresher.

Which is one of the problems with having a high octane offense. The D spends alot of game time on the field. Running that type of O with college players is one thing. Running it with 30 year old linemen is another.

It'll be interesting to see how pro defenses adapt. One of the biggest differences rookies mention going from college to the pros is the speed.

It's not for everybody. I expect Philadelphia to be pretty good at it, since they're one of the teams that have the perfect marriage of personnel and philosophy. I think they're going to be a horrifying offense to face right away.

That's true. But if the offense is scoring 40 points a game, the defense can go fuck itself.
