I'm confused. Everything will void on the fifth day of the 2014 NFL year if he's still on the roster? Why would the voided salaries incur a cap hit? If that's the case then it seems like Gettleman just pushed a lot of money onto the 2014 cap unnecessarily.

There's still bonus money on the books. $3.6 mil left from this year's 'bonus' and $4 mil from previous monies paid.

Three things could (in theory) happen.

    1. we would cut him prior to the 5th day of the league year. I suppose we could then deem it a June 1 cut and push $2.7 mil from this year's bonus to 2015

    2. we don't cut him and allow the contract to void

    3. we give him a new deal prior to the 2014 void date that replaces these bogus years on the contract with something that makes sense for both sides.

Remember, Jordan would still cost us $4 million in pro-rated bonus money in 2014 if we let him play out 2013 under his current deal and then cut him.

This is cool...maybe I guess. I was never a big fan of gross to start with. I don't get his hype.

His hype is fairly simple. He's a really good protector in a spot that's incredibly important to the quarterback.

He's not perfect like some would like him to be, but he's damn good.

I understand the hype of elite tackles. They probably are the most important position after qb. I'm sayin I don't think gross is elite like everyone makes him out to be. Guy false starts every other play and just seems average.

That is probably because you aren't paying attention. According to this, he had exactly one false start penalty in 2012. Four penalties overall.

    All Players - 2012 - NFL Penalty Stats Tracker - List/Statistics/Data of NFL Penalties - 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013

Offsetting and declined penalties are ignored there so his total isn't as accurate. But False Start penalties can't be declined as it is a dead ball foul.

I don't see anyone here saying that he is elite. he clearly isn't. but at $5.5 mil, we aren't paying him like he is.

I'm pretty sure it would have only been $2 million, as that's all that was left of his option bonus. The last of the signing bonus counted against this season. So it would have been a $2 million cap hit against 2014 to cut him, whereas now it's going to be $5.6 million against the 2014 cap. I do not like this move whatsoever. It frees up some cap space in 2013, but this team (like the country in general) needs to start focusing on long-term financial health. Needlessly pushing even more money into 2014 only complicates the already huge problems the team was going to have with that season.

You're right. sorry. there was a Roster Bonus of $2 mil for 2014 and i included that as 'pro-rated' amounts...which it is. but only pro-rated for '14. Cutting him before that bonus is paid would clear that amount.

I know you're dead set against pushing cap into the future, but we got a player for $3 million less in 2013 and $7 mil in cap savings. We already had almost $11 mil allocated to him to the cap in 2014 and we cut that in half AND get a player for 2013. I don't see it as a bad deal.
