Compete for what? Compete for the SB? No. Compete for a playoff spot? Game by game, make it to 9-7? I think it's possible.

Depending on when the 7 losses might come, that could equate to competing for a playoff berth. Competing, not winning. Still better than what we've had for the last four years and staves off total fan hostility.

Then you have to think, blowing it up again could be such a trainwreck that our QB refuses to play for the Panthers any more, which would be pretty fucked up. I could definitely see that happening. edit: And I know that, realistically, he would have to but we don't want that kind of situation, at all.

With a little more luck they could have competed last year.

A decent draft and a few cheap quality additions to fill some holes and why not.

For all our cap woes, were really only likely to lose Gamble and he has missed signifacant time the last 3 years anyway, plus, weve proven we can win without him. The pass rush really helped our issues there.

Get that right side of the OLine fixed and ill feel good about going into next year.

9-7 hasn't been an NFC wild card berth since 2007. You have to be 10-6 or better, and I don't think the Panthers can get there with this roster under any circumstances. 9-7 with some luck, sure, but that just means a "feel good" winning season while still watching the playoffs on television.

Maybe, but I think most fans realize they have to blow this up at some point to start un-fucking Hurney's mess. And frankly, the sooner the better, because Cam's contract will run out before we know it, necessitating either repeated franchise tags or making him the highest paid player in the league.

    As long as he's gone

Worth a 2nd round pick? LMAO Maybe we'll get lucky and he will sign in the division

I think that compares favorably to an environment where we're staring at 4-12, 6-10 the next couple of years after the purge, if I am ownership.

Yep that's going to be a problem. I don't know if would be less of one if we can win a few more games but think it could work that way.

But you realize those years are going to come regardless, right? All this does is postpone the inevitable.

I've decided that when push comes to shove, our ownership's mentality is a lot closer to the one with the pie chart who has investors to answer to, than the one who is 100% committed to SB championship or bust.

Maybe, but JR has been extremely resistant to do what the fans wanted before. Rather than him being concerned about the fanbase, I think JR simply wants to take whatever slim chance he has to win now because he doesn't know if he'll even be alive for 2015.

I think we have a realistic chance this year, if only because I don't expect our division to be very strong. Atlanta will probably come back, at least a couple of games, I don't think Tampa will get better, and the Saints getting Payton back might be offset by them also adding Rob Ryan. We shouldn't be the favorite or any shit like that, but I think we can compete.
