The Carolina Panthers have begun the process of trying to get under the salary cap prior to the start of free agency.

The Panthers have restructured the contract of center Ryan Kalil. The move frees up about $2.2 million. That leaves the Panthers with about $131 million committed toward a salary cap that is expected to be slightly more than $120 million.

Kalil was given a $5 million signing bonus, but his base salary was dropped from $4.75 million to $750,000. His cap figured dropped from $8.6 million to $6.4 million.

The Panthers are expected to create the remaining salary-cap space by releasing players and restructuring more contracts

Jeez, they are nickel and diming down to the cap and I wonder how that will affect future years as well.

Generally the player receives an incentive for restructuring, which means not only pushing the money saved on this season into future ones but usually adding some additional future money on top of it.

Looks like in this case, they added a year to the contract (2017) with a low base salary ($1m) but the year is voidable. Here's the impact to the cap:

    Year Previous Cap Current Cap
    2013 $8.6 mil $6.4 mil
    2014 $8.6 mil $10.4 mil
    2015 $9.216 mil $11.016 mil
    2016 $7.75 mil $9.55 mil
2017 N/A $2.8 mil (but will be most likely be voided)

Basically, they turned a $5mil option bonus and $4mil in salary into a signing bonus of $9mil, which will pro-rate over 5 years (since they added 2017) at $1.8 mil per year. The only benefit to RK it seems is that he has access to $4 million now rather than having to wait until the season starts.

Don't like it, but it's necessary to a point.

That seems like a steep price to pay for getting 2 mil in cap relief for one year.

Looks like the Average Per Year numbers, althought Mangold's looks a little off...I show it at $7.725 mil.
