Open in the NFL means that the receiver is in position to make a catch without the defender making a play on the ball, and yes they are doing that. Having no defender within two yards doesn't happen because you ran a great route. Either a defender fell down or it was a blown assignment.

You are right. LaFell was at around two yards away from his man there, but because he got mad skills, eh...no.

That's why you look at totals instead of individual plays. Steve has had a ton of drops in his own right.

well, I did read it and it didn't have its intended effect, apparently. it just re-affirms what my eyes tell me...Smitty cant carry this receiving corp anymore, nor should he be expected to.

I also try to stay away from telling others what to do...

since I have a legitimate fear that the next offense won't be the same Coryell structure, chances are the next guy would want to go with more 2 WR looks, and that might mean an inexpensive vet to go with LaFell. I don't think drafting a guy is a major fix right now - an upgrade yes, but with the same inconsistencies and having no idea what you have.

I would like to see real numbers on Smith's drops and where they rank. He's obviously had problems with that in the past but that doesn't mean anything about this year.

I think that drop was a good thing: losing a meaningless game against KC allowed the team to kick ATL's ass while keeping a top 10 draft spot.

Being mindlessly devoted to a point of view regardless of facts not only is a disservice to yourself, but undermines the entire point of a message board. The reality is that LaFell has been very effective when targeted, and that Steve Smith isn't doing that much better (if any) than the other receiving options in this offense. Louis Murphy needs to go and the Panthers need to find a competent replacement as third wideout, but that's clearly all that needs to change in terms of the receiving corps. Tolbert and the backs already aren't used enough, so unless you think the Panthers should run the ball even less than they do, I have no idea where you think more targets are going to come from.
