The top tier during Smittys tenure would have to be TO, Moss and Harrison. While Ive enjoyed his time here he isnt on the level of these guys. As much as I love him for being our guy, its the Hall of Fame not the Hall of the Very Good. There is no good argument for him getting in. Even if he led the league for the next few years it would be a tough sell.

Yup. Ring of Honor type player and I'd love for him to get a statue where he's punching a teammate, but no chance at the Hall of Fame. Taking the discussion back to its original fork, there's a decent chance Smitty's number could be retired but I still doubt it just because NFL teams don't do that a lot.

Punching people doesn't factor into the HOF process.

I felt Irvin got held up by his penchant for hoes/blow, so I guess it's a factor. Winning a super bowl (with a game MVP) would probably help the Rules and Regulations chances.

89 is conservatively on pace for a HOF-potential career.

Some other notable single season and post-season achievements do help.

Will be tough to get 8-10 TD a year here.

Derrick Mason is done. Smitty has 3 more years in him and will wind up in top 10 all time for receiving yards. Nuff said.

IMO-his length of tenure, his fiery/passionate nature and retiring as the team stat leader in all catagories would create an excepetion, plus the fact 89 is not a terribly popular WR number id want them to retire his.

Irvin got in for being part of "the triplets". Being part of winning 3 Super Bowls and being involved with TV helped him alot. His numbers didnt get him in. Had he not been part of those teams id wager most people wouldve already forgotten him as a player.
