they haven't officially thrown out a cap, that I know of.

It's also hard to say what's counted in that 124 million. If it counts option bonuses as full payments against the 2012 cap, we're golden (because they'd get, as expected, paid as signing bonuses and prorated). If they count them as not against the cap yet, it's tougher.

A Davis rework is tough. Tearing up the contract in its entirety means being cut, which means massive acceleration of bonus. If he says he'll just forego the bonus, great, we save big. There's middle ground in there.

Only one year of Davis' bonus has already counted, so he counts $5.6 million against the 2012 cap if he's released.

actually that's inaccurate, but it is a common misconception. lots of people have made this mistaken assumption.

Is there something I should know about the aforementioned bull-semen fortified jello shots?

BUT, he'll count about 11.5 million if we keep him on his existing structure. That means we could gain $6 millionish in cap space.

Actually he will only count $5.65 million if he stays on the roster without changing his current deal. Option bonuses are prorated like signing bonuses, whereas roster bonuses are not and count strictly against the year they're paid. So cutting Thomas Davis would save the team $500k.
