He's suggested adding future picks, but Williams is worth less than Allen, and the 8/9 is worth more than what they gave up.

As for a contract, Freeney got $72 million over 6 years (12 million per year) in 07. Allen got $76 million over 6 years (12.66 mil a year), with $15 million upfront and an option bonus of another 8. Peppers got $92 million over 6 years ($15.33 million) two years ago. So the elite end market has gone up considerably.
Johnson got $12.0 million last year, and we love him but he's a tier below, so you can definitely assume another mil or two a year above, so based on the above, I'd guess 6 years, $84 million.

We could argue the $12-15 million range one way or another, but I don't think the percent difference is enough to change whether we can afford to fix only one position.

Adding one awesome player is better than adding two mediocre ones.

certainly, because you're posing the question to suggest that two mediocre players is the entire value you'd get out of spending roughly $80 million. How many mediocre players go for $40 million apiece on average?

So, clearly, you'd get more than mediocre on average from the free agent market, and then you're better at two places by a good margin still.

On a per year basis, magnus. You suggested that Mario would cost $12-15 mil. Williams for that price is almost certainly going to be better than two guys you'd get for $6-7.5 mil each.

So you're suggesting that Mario Williams would create more than double the impact of two Cullen Jenkins

    yes? no?

Also, for Stryker - it's worth noting that all of the great offenses, minus New England getting the easy pickings, are gone with two more games to go.

It is absolutely hilarious that you say this after spending so many posts badgering me about how you know for a fact (somehow) that Cullen Jenkins wouldn't have signed here for $6 million. But yes, to indulge the hypothetical I do believe that Mario Williams has more of an impact on a defense than two of Cullen Jenkins.

You mean the past 2 Super Bowl winners?

You can build a winner several ways. San Fran has done a good job as have the Giants and Ravens. IMO it would be an easier road for us to build an elite offense with a stout O line maybe another reciever( although Lafell, Gettis, Olsen and Shockey could be enough with proper play calling and good QB play) and more opportunity for our running backs. Ever think about how scary this offense could be if we were running the ball like we did when DW and JS had 1100 yards + Cams running + improving the passing game through Cam progressing and the mismatches that could be created with all this? Possibly a very dominating group for a long time. There are some good OL prospects near our slot. Blue chip OL almost always contribute right away and aren't as big of a gamble as DL or CB, this is the theory behind my wants.

A lot of you guys wanted Darius last year. We went with Cam and some panic/frustration ensued. Just don't be surprised if the FO thinks more like I do then you do. IMO you don't draft a QB #1 unless you're planning on building around him. I just think OL is more of a priority right now. No question the defense needs help, maybe the best help is coaching and a better offense that scores, eats up the clock, and makes opponants one dimensional.

that was, supposedly, Cullen Jenkins' value according to you. So therefore random player like Cullen Jenkins would sign for that, according to you. And no, I definitely disagree that two good starting DTs that can also rush the passer wouldn't be more impact than Williams.

Williams would upgrade both rush and run, so now teams are running up the middle and passing short. It still leave massive holes, even in basic paper theory.

    Mario Williams = Julius Peppers

Both very good. Not enough in and of themselves to put you over the edge. A lot of money for bragging rights in the sack column while watching the playoffs from the couch. Big Cat ain't writing the check guys, move on.
