Ok. Then we trade for Mario Williams.

I think a 1st and a 3rd or something is appropriate. You hit the nail on the head that we would have to make some room for him, but it'd be sweet to have him and Charles Johnson across from each other. That's a lot of money at DE

I'll start by saying I don't think Williams is a bad fit for them, and they definitely made it work with him when he was healthy. You could argue it either way - they did somewhat learn to live without him.

Pick 8 is worth 1400, 9 1350 - 17 is worth 950, and the highest 3rd is worth 265 (the top two picks in the 3rd barely make up the difference), so 8/9 would have to be all we give (I don't think of Williams as good as Allen, so you'd almost rather have something back, too).

    Upside?
*Williams would make a significant difference. He's an immediate upgrade.
    * He'd be a star on this team and there's a hometown draw.
    Downside?
    *I don't know that we need two ends as good as we'd have, on a team that wants to blitz;
*we'd remain talent poor at many positions (partly to work on what we have above, we don't want to be shitty at end but it's not like we're intending to be a Tampa 2)
*paying Williams probably isn't in our future

This trade is better than Coples, but I'm also not zeroing in on end being the critical problem. Hardy's biggest problem was run defense.

Eh. Our cap is already blowed up. Not really in favor. I've been nosing around today checking out the likely suspects. Other than Kirkpatrick, I don't see any defenders that seem worth the pick.

Right now after reading the scouting reports I'm coming away hoping for the tackle from Stanford, Jonathan Martin. Between he and Riley Reiff, it seems Reiff is better run blocking, and Martin is a more natural pass blocking LT. Seems like a good replacement for Gross.

we could do worse than either tackle, especially if it moved someone like Otah inside. If we do drop Wharton, we've got nothing at guard (Schwartz, I guess).

Both are good prospects. I'm not 100% if either are ideal RTs (Reiff is closer), Gross won't move, and I don't know if we drop a top ten on a RT. But, if we came away with upgrades on the OL and DL, and didn't do as much in skill, that wouldn't kill me, the DL was a liability and the OL was at times as well. I'm not that worried about losing Gross anymore than Smith, as we're bad enough in spots now that 2014 isn't a critical worry, but with 5000 snaps worth of OL play out there, you can fit that in.

If we're willing to do some trading for existing players, what's out there at DT?

Jared Allen had a DUI or something nastier the year he left the Chiefs didn't he. Not cheap but I think the Chiefs wanted rid of a publicity problem.

The DUI wasn't the problem as much as the Chiefs were going into a rebuilding phase and he was going to be a free agent so they traded him for better compensation instead of hoping for a comp pick when he left in free agency.

You really do. CJ has been shut down lately in part because there's no one else the offense worries about. A second pass rushing DE will also take some pressure off of that weak secondary. The advantage of spending the money on a DE as opposed to a corner is that the offense can just choose to avoid a high priced corner.

I think that's why it won't happen. Hurney has so fucked the cap that it would necessitate some gutting just to make it possible.

    Eh, it's pretty critical.
