I thought the Armanti Edwards comments were interesting too. Maybe Richardson had more influence on that draft pick than Hurney.

 

I laughed at the Martin comments.

ss54 I think you're right about Armanti. Hurney has almost certainly, in my mind, had directives on others too.

 

Hell, he was kind in his assessment in thinking Martin played safety.

 

What I hope we can do is get a football player that can be a starter and a tough football player. I think toughness is important ... I don't think we'll be drafting a finesse player.

Glad to see his comments about Shockey as well. He and Olsen added some dimension to the team with their blocking, and the rediscovery of the TE position that took a bit of pressure off of Smitty. There doesn't seem to be much drama between Shockey and Olsen; I think they genuinely enjoy playing together and splitting playing time in certain formations.

 

This interview disturbs me because it makes me think I have been wrong about the extent of Richardson's involvement. The comment about free agents is especially chilling. Could JR have told Hurney not to sign any "expensive" free agents last off-season when the team had so much cap room? Even if so, I blame Hurney for not having the knowledge or balls to make sure it happened anyway since it would have been in the best interests of the team, but if Richardson did make such a directive (which we don't know, I'm just inferring based on his comment) then this franchise is even more fucked than I thought. Firing Hurney is still completely justified and necessary, but things may not get much better until a new owner is in place as well.

Ugh.

Sounds like Richardson wants the team to restructure Thomas Davis instead of cutting him, which means throwing even more money and cap space down the shitter. I do like that he wants Shockey back, but the rest of the interview makes me nauseous. Just awful, awful stuff.

 

I think Richardson has much more influence over Hurney's decisions than anyone gives credit. Hurney can't pursue high dollar players in FA, and probably must draft at the direction of the Big Cat, if he expects to remain employed.

When he gave his sons the heave-go, it was a strong signal that he still runs the team, it's his pocketbook, and anyone who doesn't share his vision is free to work elsewhere.
