2012 mock draft

Charles Johnson is not one of the top 5 DEs, but he's arguably 6 to 10. While Steve has been great this season, he's not a top 5 WR either. He's not a Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, or Larry Fitzgerald. He's also not as reliable as Wes Welker. The Panthers barely even throw to Steve in the red zone.

 

Yeah, he will. Jacksonville desperately needs receivers, but Jeffery's draft stock is falling like a rock. It's actually not out of the question that he might fall out of the first round entirely. If the Jags reached on a WR, it would probably be Floyd.

 

all of this is going off message - we have a lot of talent on offense, and not that much on defense. Given that defense is in need in various places, it's a lot easier to fit in a defender than to force an offensive player that might not play immediately.

 

agree with both of you. try to get a special player with the first pick. try to get an impact player and a couple of good role players on D AND ST thru FA. interesting to see if the cap will allow that and who will be available. but even if we can't pick up an impact D player in FA, still agree with Collin that the 1st pick has to be someone we believe to be all-pro caliber ... even if on offense.


my wishlist would be:

1st, WR -- agree with Collin's and Thelt's points
2nd, DB -- although any player that is not a bust would be awesome
4th, OG -- maybe a little high for a G, but Cam is too valuable not to protect
5th ST -- gunner
6th K
7th anybody that can make the team and contribute

Except that there really aren't many first round quality defenders in this draft, so if they want to address that side of the ball then trading down seems the better course. Claiborne might be a special player, but he'll probably go earlier. Kirkpatrick and Coples are both solid, but probably not special. After that, who knows. It's just weird to me that this draft is so weak after the last one was weak as well.

 

if we're dead set on WR for whatever reason, one defensive free agent isn't going to get anywhere near it. Guard, fair enough, but OT should be a bigger worry. That whole right side of the line is shit.

If you were doing that, or set out to do that, you would first have to enter in having hired a very good, maybe older DT, a starting level but cheap LB, a good backup MLB, retain Schwartz and Shockey, and hire a veteran kicker and punter (all but guaranteeing that last bit).

 

We have enough weapons on offense, cam improving over the off season should make what we already have better. I'd love to keep Shockey. The need is on OL. That said, if you have a playmaker available you take him unless there's a stout tackle or elite guard there.

Defensively, our ends and linebackers are pretty good and fairly deep. Drafting 2 tackles last year makes me think they won't draft another one this year. We need playmakers in the secondary a safety or corner.

 

Do not agree at all about DE being deep. I like Hardy & Keiser as backups, but the team desperately needs another legitimate 4-3 starter.

 

hopefully we can retain Connor, if not we'll want to draft a MLB with a low pick. yep on DT. we seem to have enough young linebackers that i don't think it's a need. tend to disagree with the amount of need on D. we need a couple of impact players on D. if one is there in the 1st, i say grab one. if not, we can still win ... if Beason come back full speed. otherwise, it will be tuff.

yep on Schwartz. Shockey is a wish thing, i think we need his personality. Schwartz, Bell and Otah to me lessen the need for a OT but I would be good if they get a really good LT in the draft rather than a WR. but i'd rather have a WR, been saying that for past 10 years or so. with Cam, I think it would be smart to get a young guy that can start developing into his go to guy for years to come.

OG has been a huge hole for a couple of seasons and really good ones can be found lower in the draft.

 

Personally I like to start up front but we need better CB play than we've had this year for sure. How high we'd take one depends on how they view Hogan, if there's one where we pick they can't pass on, what we can do in FA.
