Unfortunately, we've moved up to where Kalil is a realistic pick again. It's a good, smart pick, and we need better trench play more than we need defense specifically, but I don't think it'll require as high a pick. It just also seems to make the most sense.

Maybe you could get lucky picking 2nd and be able to move to 5 and still get him if all this quarterback nonsense holds up (these other guys just aren't that great)

it's just one of those deals where, after having a DT in the last two drafts that could be top five at the least, the year we are ready to take one and it's not happening yet. A CB, WR, OT, you could use any and not look back, but the impact isn't the same. It's not like, say, finding that quarterback who works out when you need one (even though you just picked one, so ideally that's not the analogy, but I'm already ankle deep in it). CB, you have your coverage under control; WR you upgrade the other option and anticipate that guy will finally be "the guy" you can use to supplant/eventually replace Smith. OT, you give yourself options with the existing tackles and you make your offense even better.

But, it's not the same, and that kinda blows. There's no doubt that another Dareus would be 100% ideal and that it would remarkably change our defense. I don't regret what we did, but we'll keep hurting without options. Again you could probably rent a Garay for a couple years (you'll have to hear it a couple hundred times until it eventually doesn't happen and I get heartbroken, but I tend not to do that anymore so I'm due), you could get away taking the WR for instance. To be honest you would want more of a free agent presence on a young, struggling defense anyway.

we can upgrade anywhere, really, but I think we have some good young safeties. A 4th (or possibly third, but people really shit on Pugh too much) safety with a 2nd seems high. They could play better, especially in tackling, but I think we have a good mix of talent there and what we need there is a killer special teamer.

grab Garey, and get Edwards back and maybe a Deshawn Goldson in FA would give us some help, and a bit of flexibility in the draft..

Kalil or a CB in round 1, then BPA..

If we do get the #2 we need to trade that ************ to a team that's desperate for a QB. Washington would sell their soul for a young QB like Landry Jones or Barkley for USC.

I thought I remembered you being one the first to single him out. In any case, I have more of a problem with Godfrey. The safety play overall is pretty bad, and that's one position where we haven't had major injuries. Considering how crucial it is to this type of defense, I think it should be addressed if possible. There are bigger needs, but I'd still like to see something done whether in the draft or free agency.

The fact that there are multiple options below Luck kind of undermines that whole notion. Why would they trade a lot to get up instead of just taking the one that falls to them?

I'm hoping a team really falls on love with one of the qbs not named luck and offers us a 2nd to flip position dropping us down 2-5 slots

Barkley will go top 10 and maybe top 5, but Landry Jones and RG3 will probably last into the teens if not later. Jones shouldn't go in the first two rounds at all.

    edit:
And while I'm usually in favor of trading down, I just don't feel good enough about the top prospects in this draft to be confident you get someone valuable at #5 or whatever. Kalil is a pretty good bet to be an above average player for a long time, so if the team likes him then I'm fine with taking him at #2. My guess is that they are still committed to Jordan Gross and will reach for defense instead.

I know we need defense bad, but I would really like to see Kalil here.

There is hope, that being he may not have become a Rivera guy. Nobody saw Kasay getting released.

Letting go of Gross leaves us with a rookie and Otah. Maybe we could cut bait with Otah and go with Gross and Kalil. I think I would, if it came down to it.

They could also bump Otah in to RG and play Kalil at RT or shift Gross to RT. I just don't think Hurney or Richardson will be keen on the idea of Gross no longer being a cornerstone, which is sort of what you have to think in order to spend the #2 pick on Kalil.

Has anyone ever traded up to take OT?

There is enough stuff working against a Kalil pick that I could certainly agree we may pass. We need defense in the worst way, and then there's the fact they may believe in what we already have at OT (I don't but they won't consult me for my opinion). Factor in that we're up against the cap as far as FA activity, it looks like we'd go D.

In favor is that JR, Rivera and Hurney are all tied to Newton thriving (and staying healthy), they probably wouldn't let Gross get in the way of that, if it came down to it (though I still think Otah loses before Gross) . Getting a franchise LT to go with the franchise QB would be a pretty sound move (let's not focus on the term Franchise, it's pretty obvious they all see Newton as that).

As far as Otah, how can anyone trust him to be on the field at any position? I keep comparing it to how they treated Morgan but if they were to continue to count on Otah it's the same scenario.
