by definition, a franchise player is top 5 at their respective position... so there are 5 franchise place kickers in the league...

the Panther cut theirs... he'll be kicking in BofA stadium this Sunday for the Saints

Rick Preston, senior writer for Just4Kix.com, the leading website dedicated to coverage of professional placekickers, says there are seven franchise placekickers: Sebastian Janikowski, Jason Hanson, Robbie Gould, Rian Lindell, Steven Gostkowski, Rob Bironas, and Adam Vinatieri. He says a franchise kicker has to have "outstanding, although not necessarily awesome" stats and have been with his current team a minimum of five years. Also, Preston frowns on kickers that have such weak legs a team has had to use a kickoff specialist. He says unless stats are "awesome," they are pussies not worthy of the franchise tag. Preston will reveal in an upcoming column his requirements for earning the "elite kicker" tag. He says there are only two in the league. any of you prima-donna cocksuckers care to venture a guess?

fwiw, Preston is the nephew of noted uber-guru Lou Stenson.

NONSENSE!!! That big, bald, Fred-looking oaf Janikowski kicks off his back foot consistantly and Rian Lindell doesn't even know how to spell Ryan.

I agree, to a degree. Granted, he has a bad habit of kicking off his back foot, and there are times, especially on the road, when he uses a slight crow-hop that borders on illegal, but if it wasn't for Janikowski the Raiders would be 0-2-2. Maybe even 0-3-1

I always thought Kasay wasn't on kick-offs because we needed a kicker who could tackle due to our poor coverage unit

if Kasay can hang on another four seasons with the Saints he will, by definition, become a franchise kicker. Anyway, I could be wrong (actually, Vern Plank, Rick Preston's research assistant would be wrong), but I thought Kasay wasn't in on kickoffs because he was into pagan witchcraft -- his nickname was The Kickin' Wiccan -- and his religion prohibits it.

A franchise kicker should be able to make a 50 yard field goal, or at least get it somewhere close.

I agree. I think a kicker must have a FG percentage of at least 80 percent overall (100 percent 45 and under; 95 percent 46-55; 70 percent 56-60; 93 percent 60 and over) to be considered "elite". If kicker meets those standards but makes less than 97 percent but more than 94 percent of his PATs, he should be relegated to "marginally elite" status.
