    Good bye Kasay.....and Lloyd
I guess we're figuring that Mare can do both of these players job.
Kasay is what 2 million a year, Lloyd was 600,000 cap number. Mare 3 mil a year.
    I'm cool with it

I'm seriously wondering if Hurney forgot about the new kickoff rules.

There was no reason to pay a lot of money to a kicker who clearly is not elite. Mare is average at best. Jesus, if it was considered that big a need then we could have used the 4th round pick on Alex Henery.

I really hope Kasay just told the team he's retiring or something

Probably, I'd bet he held off because of his player rep job.

edit: but I don't really like this signing either.

That makes a little more sense if Kasay was planning on retiring. I still think it is too much money for a kicker, especially one of Mare's quality.

If I had to argue why the Panthers did this if Kasay isn't retiring then I'd suggest the following.

FG% - Their FG% is almost identical. Kasay at 81.9 and Mare at 81.4. So let's say that's a wash.

Age - Kasey is 3-4 years older but I don't really think age plays that big a part in field goal kickers. Slight edge to Mare if you do.

Leg - Mare has one of the best legs for kick-offs in the league or so the interweb tells me. This allows Mare to do both kickoffs and field goals whereas before we've taken up 2 roster spots to do this. I think if you're looking for a reason to do this, here you go.

Money - Kasay had 2 years left on a 4 yr deal. I know he's owed 2 million for next year. Mare got a 4 million guarantee on a 12 million dollar contract. If you include what you'd pay a kickoff specialist that's still probably a bit pricey.

I hope Kasay wasn't cut but I'm just trying to understand what the front office might be thinking if that is the case.

Hopefully if the Panthers can make it back to a Super Bowl in my lifetime he can keep the ball in bounds :50:
