Okay, then I'll amend it. If Jackie Miles dies between now and training camp, Newton might wear #1.

That has been the tradition here. However i think they were gonna let him have the #1 jersey if he wanted it, he had it at his press conference with his Name on it. I think they saw it as the lesser of two evils by avoiding this #2 controversy.

However im sure he still try and get it when he finally gets paid and the lockout is over. Have other teams assigned rookie numbers yet?

Big Cat should have a word in Bakers ear and stop all this nonsense. Its a marketing opertunity they shouldnt miss. Hell, maybe even Clausen sells a few more moving to #7 and all the Newton haters.

Im sure we can can count on one hand how many jerseys Baker has sold.

High draft picks have always had the opportunity to get their #, especially at the QB position. Clausen not getting #7 last year was not the norm.

And Seriously, whats Bakers problem, does he think he's Elway or Vick out there. #7 has traditionally been a QB number, not a friggen punter.

Wonder if anyone has done analysis of jersey number sales/popularity.

#7 is alot of peoples favorite lucky number, give it to a QB and watch sales rocket.

THIS IS RETARDED, IM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL.

I was thinking #1 solely as an ego thing on Newtons part. Hell bump Gettis off of #12. That ought to be a QB number solely.

Punters are a dime a dozen - like baker . . but big deal - give baker number 1, and let Newton have 7. Number one or 2 seem more like punter numbers anyway

I wonder why the NFL/Panthers are worried about merchandising when there is a lock out. . . Seems they should suffer too. Me hopes the number thing is not resolved until the lockout is resolved. . . the NFL should have no rights to market something they have cut off? Maybe they can't cut baker until the lock out is off who knows?

i believe he had a jersey w/ #1 on it because he's a 1st rounder, just like all the other high picks

Jackie Miles, as has been pointed out, will not be giving that number out. I'd love to find the other "banned" numbers, other than 51.

If #17 is off limits, I might puke.

I think he's also left out a year on some numbers. No one got 90 last year (I believe), still honoring Tim Morabito of course.

Thats what i initially assumed. Especially when it was in NY on draft day. But those jerseys have no name on the back, just the #1.

By the time he had his press conference in Charlotte, he had a #1 jersey with Newton on the back. There was alot of fan support for him to get the #1, 1st round draft pick, #1 overall, the warren moon connection.
