It's going to be fun, if Newton becomes--gasp--a quality starter, to see how many fans cheer against him, just to defend their initial position on him.

I saw this with Delhomme--he would dominate in the playoffs, then--when the bottom fell out in Seattle, the vultures came out.

I'd just like to win, no matter who's playing or coaching. But, you bet your ass--a ton will pull a Rush Limbaugh and "hope for him to fail". If/when he does, it's "HAHAHAHAHA time". If he doesn't, it will be "WELL, HE HAD A GREAT DEFENSE. GREAT RUNNING GAME. GREAT OLINE."

************ better use that chip on his shoulder wisely, because it's there.

Exactly. I think the chip is there. I think the will, the want is there. Now it's just to take the time and learn it, use the chip, keep the chip, and go play when it's time.

I guess my point is, less Collin and Mags, none of us are really qualified to have a valid opinion on these picks. Unless you spend 8-12 hours each day studying coaches tape, making notes on technique, and constantly doing your research on a player's character by speaking with everyone from their past, more than once. Not to mention, attending the combine and putting every prospect of interest through a CIA-type interrogation, while evaluating their measurables.

We're picking Newton for a couple simple reasons:

    1. The front office feels he has long-range potential to be very good.
    2. Marketing

Please don't confuse my stance on this. I am not a big fan of the guy, personally. But, in about 10 hours, he's ours, so I'm looking at what else transpires beyond this pick to make the team more productive in 2011, and beyond. Beats sitting around shitting my pants about something that's going to happen that I have absolutely no control over.

You don't have to be an expert to have a valid opinion, and "let's trust the guys who do this for a living" wears out when those guys keep doing a miserable job. It's not like Hurney is the only one who's horrible. Quite a few NFL teams have been run into the ground through incompetent authority.

And seriously, when did Delhomme ever dominate in the playoffs?

Point is--and it wasn't a passive-aggressive jab, so chill--that unless you seriously study and understand the game, to your level, opinions bleed down to the "HE'S JUST LIKE JAMARCUS" level. That's fine, because concerns are valid. But I prefer specific, detailed analysis, rather than fear-based bitching.

And, ok, you get to win again on the Delhomme comment. I don't have mounds of time to play "Crossfire" with you on semantics. He put up a tremendous QB rating, with a very solid TD to turnover ratio in his first 5 playoff games. And, as I said, he shit himself in Seattle and was never the same. I'll say he was "very solid" in those games, and you can take it from there.

I do think that former Ravens Head Coach, Super Bowl Champion, and current FOX Sports/NFL Network analyst Brian Billick could share a thought or two on his "most noticable trait".

I feel kind of bad about continuing to bag on Thelt, but most posters on here aren't as bad as he is. There are actually quite a few guys on here that have worthwhile opinions, but I agree that someone won't change someone else's mind unless they provide some evidence and analysis to justify that opinion.

Intelligence, and the effort put into to obtaining information, should be celebrated. But, in the end, some folks are just simpletons, whereas others have the capacity to absorb this type of analysis.
