I made a quick list of 1st round qb picks since 2002. As expected, alot of garbage. That said, I feel all right about Newton when I look at it.

Check out all the total shit:

    Carr
    Harrington
    Ramsey
    Leftwich
    Boller
    Grossman
    Losman
    Smith
    Leinart
    Russell
    Quinn
    Campbell

    Wow.

    Good:

    Cutler
Vince Young ( at first )
    Stafford
    Flacco
    Sanchez
    e Manning
    Palmer
    Ryan
    Freeman

Franchise / Awesome / Everyone wants

    Rivers
    Rothlesberger
    Rodgers

8 of 12 playoff teams had a first round pick. Also, almost all non-playoff teams drafted a qb round one and it went south. So, big stuff here.

I think Newton is a legit pro prospect. He's won a shit-ton of games consecutively, he has the physical ability, he's shown an ability to step up and succeed ( ju-co to SEC ), he's shown ability to handle pressure and lead big comebacks.

He acts arrogant but doesn't, imo, have the sense of entitlement that leinart and quinn and clausen seemed to have. He seems smarter than Vince Young. He seems smarter than Jamarcus. He seems more athletic than either of them. I've heard Vince is so dumb he can barely form words.

Kinda seems like a cross between Vince Young and Big Ben on steroids.

Really - alot of guys with question marks and far less upside drafted, some of them in the top five. I like the move, if we do it.

newton only has 292 big-boy college pass attempts. that's very worrisome.

QBs get slotted higher because of the nature of the position, but also, most of them get drafted by the bad teams. They often don't have a platform to be successful. Guys like Campbell and Alex Smith are actually doing ok in spite of that.

After the way Cam played this year, is there significant doubt he would not be as successful next year, had he stayed? If he had similar numbers next year he would far surpass Aaron Rodgers' numbers. After reading the article of how he was as a junior college player (the year between Florida and Auburn) I have decided this kid is the real deal.

    Pat Kirwan: Cam Newton

I don’t believe the entire organization is in lockstep about this selection, but Newton is a guy with star qualities. As Ron Wolf, former Packers general manager, said to me last week, “I wouldn’t worry about the limited number of throws Newton made in college football (fewer than 300). If you do that, you are looking for a reason not to draft him.”

Cam simply wont get 2-3 years like Rodgers. We dont have a Favre sitting in front of him.

OT a tad, but Blaine Gabbert, supposedly played in a more advanced spread offense, and is supposedly more cerebral, yet statistically Cam kicked the shit out of him. I know who id rather gamble on.

And for those that say he had crap receivers Cams guys had a severe case of the dropsies too.
