What if with the 1st pick we take Newton and Clausen beats him out? It's not out or the realm of posibilities. Clausen has all of the tools, he just looked overwhelmed. This is why I wouldn't take a qb in the draft. My top five choices would be Dareus, Green, Peterson, Miller, or Fairley. Get a veteran at qb and let Clausen learn how to be an NFL qb.

it's not out of order to suggest that Clausen is, as woefully unready, more ready than Newton. Newton shouldn't be counted on through 2012 so it wouldn't really change much.

Here's another thought. What if we draft Newton, and let him sit and learn all year ( as we should if we draft him).....and then we still end up with the # 1 next year. Assuming we are confident that Newton is ready to roll in 2012, do you still draft Luck (and trade Newton) or do you trade Luck for about 4 first round picks ?

No need to start Newton right away if we draft him, but if we do, and let him learn as a rookie? I'd be more comfortable with the staff surrounding him than the one surrounding Clausen.

That being said...I think you let CN sit for a while...

Yeah I've thought about this too. The pick just doesn't make sense. We really need a veteran, if they start that's fine, if Clausen start I'm ok with that too. It's pretty much unheard of to have 3 qb's with only 8 games of experience. Basically you're setting youself up to fail. I think the Newton talks are a smoke screen, at least I hope. I don't like or dislike him but another young qb isn't as dire of a need as it's been made out to be. DT and CB is what we need, and arguably an elite WR.

Funny how Armanti Edwards no longer pops up in threads like this one.

And I keep coming back to Clausen's toe. His throwing motion was all arm, which you don't do if you've had a personal QB coach since fifth grade. He didn't complain and took the heat when it came, so we didn't see how much the toe may have affected him. But film from last season vs. film as a golden-domer shows a player not stepping into his throws, or shifting his weight in a balanced way.

Clausen was way over his head, but I'd like to see a game or two with a healthy foundation before pronouncing him a potential great backup quarterback.

And if the Panthers do draft Newton and Clausen beats him out, I won't be all that surprised. Newton's throwing mechanics are horrible, and he has healthy feet.

I was just getting to this.
Here's the plan: After pulling the ultimate deception last year (pretending he could barely step foot on the field), we now fool everyone by unveiling "Wild Mountaineer", with AE AND Cam Newton on the field as dual QB's....

the extra time off will help JC's toe, but I'd feel better about whatever we do in the draft if we knew about the toe firsthand.
