I'd hold off too many assumptions until April 6th, when Brady v. NFL goes before a Federal Judge. If the players win that round, the NFL will essentially be forced to do business in 2011 under the 2010 CBA until the current dispute is settled in the court. That means no lockout, no rookie wage scale, and we have all of two free agents, Thomas Davis and one other. JA, DW, CJ are all Restricted FAs.

I'm not sure that's accurate, as there's nothing a court can do to make a business stay open, although they can end a "lockout." The ultimate power move would be to consolidate all franchises as one NFL entity, branches of which would then be owned by the individual owners. If the owners could ever swallow their pride enough to go that route, legally the players would be completely fucked.

ESPN says the information I quoted was "likely"

that would be tough. While it'd mean very low rent on a lot of good players, some of them are essentially unneeded and in return, a #1 overall would remain an untradeable guaranteed $70 million player.

So, how would people feel about just passing on the pick?

Seeing as there are several players on our radar, we could get one we covet at a more reasonable price.

Byproduct would be seeing what Denver/Fox would do, which wouldn't be a consideration for Hurney but would provide some entertainment for some of us.

Anyhow, along those lines, how far we could slide and still get one of our preferred players?

People are saying that teams wouldn't have to trade to the top slot to get the player they want, maybe by dropping we could be the team in the position someone wanted to move into.

Or simply declare to the appropriate teams that we'd accept a trade for the top pick that paid us compensation for whatever slot we deemed to be the one teams would trade into. Don't worry about dropping down, just take value as if we had.

Strategically you could, but I wouldn't.

Which is why what you actually said was wrong. The owners wouldn't be "forced" to go that route, it would simply be one of their options.
