Hey I've trashed Softli on here plenty over the years but I must admit, the track record on 1st round picks is pretty good.

That doesn't mean I advocate it, I'm still hoping for a trade down.

I have no problem with Gross, Gamble, T Davis and DW, the 1st rounders we drafted '03-'06. Which I believe was the period when he was most influential.

I can see people downing Gamble but I'm not one of them.

fair enough. guess my point was that after it being framed as whether Dareus was the safest, the question wa then whether he had a higher ceiling than Newton. Well, no, if he did and he lacked the questions of the others, he'd be a consensus #1. If Newton had the upside and the lack of questions he'd be a consensus #1.

also disagree on Carriker. Never liked him. Long might be a better analogy, if he takes time to work out of the gate, which I don't. Dareus, I don't think he's as good as Raji or Ngata, who went lower, but also went lower than they deserved. He's a different type player than either two-gapper, but he can make as much impact. Maybe the ceiling is higher on Fairley, but with less butt, less anchor against the run, maybe you're drafting a one-dimensional guy with him. Not much different with Newton, whose character, longevity, and experience concerns are legit.

yeah, those picks were all good. Safe, but good. Now, with that said, he was better when he was under Bushofsky, who was an ace, and he isn't as good as Gregory, who seems to hit most of his picks and deliver quality later in the draft.

    Because

#1) there's no particular reason to think that Newton will ever be an elite QB. I think his ceiling is in that "very good" category where he could definitely help a team win games, but he's never going to be the reason why you won a trophy.

#2) His bust potential is significant. There's just so much development left for him to undergo, and my opinion about the effectiveness of coaching at the NFL level is well known. I'm not familiar with the "Parcells rules," but I do agree that you want your QB learning what he needs to know in college. The 2-3 seasons of sitting after being drafted is all about acclimating to the pro game, not about teaching someone to play quarterback.

Your other posts weren't this stupid, which made me wonder if you had actually become more intelligent since the last time we argued.
