At first, I said to myself, "Self, it doesn't work that way. There is no way to determine if either college phenom from Stanford, Luck and Harbaugh, will prosper in the NFL. You double your chances for failure. Take the BPA in the draft, and the BCA to replace Fox."

Then self said to me,"Skidmark, name an available coach who has turned around a program in a short amount of time more thoroughly that Harbaugh."

I said back, "There isn't one."

Then self said, "Now, who would you rather have coaching the Panthers? If you get someone with NFL experience, you probably get someone with no or limited head coaching experience. Harbaugh has been successful as a player and as a head coach. He knows the game. His brother did not play and he is successful. If you are going to take a chance on a guy, would you not rather take a chance on a young man who has excelled in every aspect of football and comes from a family rich in football tradition? Would you not want a very intelligent person with a tremendously high football IQ? Would you not want a 'player's coach'? Wouldn't you..."

I had to interrupt because self would not shut up. "Yes. I have to admit, I would probably want Harbaugh if Luck was not a factor."

Then self got louder. "But he IS a factor. A huge one. No coach is going to want to go to a young franchise with so much potential in today's NFL without a young QB to build around. San Francisco cannot offer this. Denver can, but would you rather have Luck or Tebow? Well?"

    "Luck."

"Exactly. Do not underestimate the bond between Luck and Harbaugh. Luck admires Harbaugh and beleives in him. They make each other better. If Luck knew he would have the chance to play in the NFL under Harbaugh, he is 100% certain to come out. Now, the Panthers don't have to worry about the chemistry between coach and QB. Luck and Harbaugh fit in well here because Carolina has a reputation as being a family. I think both will want to be here. The Panthers will make a fair offer and Harbaugh will take it."

I then said to Self, "When will we know if this prophecy comes true?"

Self was getting irritated with me. "If the Panthers make contact with Harbaugh this week, then that is the plan. It is all a matter of contract details. If we hear nothing by January 15th and Luck stays, then our front office needs to be tarred, feathered, and run out of town."

I said, "One website said the odds were 1 in 5 that both wind up here."

Self replied, "I think they might be higher than that. There is a network of support here that doesn't exist with other jobs. First, Harbaugh is familiar with Richardson and is a former Panther, but he is a former Wolverine too. Secondly, Luck and Harbaugh attribute much of their success to the other. Knowing they can be reunited for the next 12 years or so can only happen here. This is a one-time opportunity for both. It is now or never. I think both feel they can be successful without the other, but they know the chemistry they have makes them great. They both have tremendous respect for each other. I think the odds are better. I think there is a 50% chance this will happen. Higher if I knew the Panthers would interview and offer the position."

I could not top that so I started thinking about my favorite flavor of Lifesavers.

So, I think that it is all up to the Panthers' front office. A fair contract offer gets Harbaugh here and Luck follows.

Um, without being a GM, I would give him as much money as he wanted, free Bojangles biscuits for life, and he could have sex with my sister, on demand. That, sir, is a package deal.

BTW I think Richardson/Hurney were stupid to already dimiss all Assistant Coaches. They could've easily kept them a little longer so they could use Meeks as their Rooney Rule interview.

    This.

One thing about Morrison (after all the "WTF does he know about the NFL" talk that proliferated when JR hired him) is that he knows practically everybody in college football, even outside of his home conference, and can schmooze.

Certainly lends greater credibility to the idea of the Panthers going to the college HC ranks for the first time, especially considering the attractiveness of the "package deal".

Alot of the Harbaugh/Luck speculation reminds me of the Spurrier speculation. Remember the Spurrier signs removed from Seifert's last game?

Anyway, you made alot of great points.
