This is such an odd year. We're young, ok. Yes, we all know that.

On a wet field, where making cuts as a WR is like playing on rollerblades, I was impressed with two things:

    1. David Gettis--his ability to run crisp routes, and catch the damn football in traffic. He's basically doing everything we've ever asked Jarrett to do--just better and faster than DJ.

    2. Clausen's ability to read the entire field. JC made two big "Passing" errors yesterday. First was the slant to Smith where he was locked in on 89 the entire time--INT. Second, and Gannon mentioned it, he needs to do better in terms of pre-snap recognition of the weakside blitz. That's where he got his bell rung late, and it killed a potential TD drive. Other than that, I like that he--with an offensive line that resembles the infamous 2000 line--is staying calm, reading the entire field, and making good throws to every player available. Rosario, King, Goodson, Smith, Lafell, Gettis, Stewart. All had receptions yesterday, and most of the throws were spot on--not Jake Delhomme "1-2 yards behind the WR slant" heaves.

I made a Gettis thread because he's showing me instant ability, and I hope to god this staff doesn't poison it.

I agree. I wasn't high on Gettis in the preseason and I really didn't think he'd make the team. But now, he is starting to become as good a second as we've had that wasn't named Muhammed.

Our team is young and we'll have mental mistakes. That is ok. The basic fundamentals of tackling, holding on to the ball, blocking and shit like that need to get resloved quickly.

I like Clausen and think he will be a very good QB. I just don't see him immediately impacting our W/L record. We have too many other problems.

Trust me--not a homer here. I see plenty of problems, more problems that solutions.

But if (big if) they maintain health, I think Clausen and this corps of WR's will emerge into a very productive, consistent group by December.

Gettis was a bright spot. He's the only one of the kids who has shown that he could at least develop into a pro. He gets in and out of breaks well, and has shown good hands. He just needs to recognize coverages and blitzes better, which will come with experience.

Clausen also showed why he should be in. Little more athletic, nice pocket presense, ball comes out with zip.

Chicken or egg. But I just think those guys just sucked. They all had chances elsewhere, sans Jarrett, who I hope will be somewhere else.

Clausen did a great job of spreading the ball around - i'll give him that.

I pick early was bad, but the fumbled snaps baffle me.

I am more impressed with Gettis than anyone on this list, and I would compare him most closely with Carter---just a healthier version.

Let's not overlook Carter's contributions down the stretch in 2005. He made plays, even in the playoffs. He was kinda behind the 8-ball with the torn up knees deal. Colbert--he just dropped too many balls, even as a rookie. Robinson = Edwards, and Jarrett just has no football I.Q.

anywhere I lay my head I'm gonna call my home
from center and from gun. I mean, gun he can't do much about, but suggests there are some very basic things we either can't do consistently (focus) or everyone's trying to do two people's jobs to desperately crawl out of this hole.

Gettis can play. Best stuff so far. He has the ability to be Devery Henderson, or more. I don't know if he's a starter. But he's got size without being of tight end athleticism.

and yeah, Clausen doesn't get glassy in the pocket or spooked when someone's around him. He could watch the run-slide thing though.
