the money deal isn't anything new. I don't know that JR was thinking about the CBA interms of not-spending in 2008, and followed a cheap offseason with moving up for a 2nd #1 pick and spending huge on our own CB and LT, then cutting ridiculous checks to Peppers for a one year rental.

As for now, there may be some worry about the CBA - certainly it's affected the cash flow for Fox, Beason, Davis, Kalil, Williams, and maybe a few others - but I don't think we'd have spent big this year anyway. People who think we were going to spend big on Marshall or Boldin and think we didn't do it because of some major philosophical change this year? They weren't paying attention the last two years, either. Not to mention, there are major reasons for this team not to have picked those guys up anyway. And the idea that either mal-content pain in the ass WR would've been happy with being #2 to Smith? Not by a longshot.

Sure, there's a feeling that one guy might've made a difference, DT included. Going to the playoffs on the back of guys like Moose and Brayton was brilliant, though. We should've picked up more guys like that in 09 and 10, but two less extremely cheap veterans doesn't get considered as much of a chokedown.

I guess you could call the cut vets the big difference, but most of those guys were making money on deals we signed after 2008 to get around the Peppers deal - caused by the future uncapped year - or extended guys instead of cut, like Lewis and Kemoeatu. I'm not against those cuts because of the ability to get out from under the cap ramifications, regardless of whether it turns into bigtime spending next year.

I do know this - JR wants to win. He's made this move before - 2001. He made it to be successful in the next phase - NFCS realignment - and maybe this is for the next phase - the future CBA.

I am think Jerry is positioning the team for sale. He has gotten his children out of the organization and who is left if he passes on? Their are no huge contracts, young group of players, and no head coach.

Imagine if they had acquired both McNabb and Boldin this offseason.

IIRC You didn't think McNabb would work here

it's also easy to say "well, we need WR help, and Antonio Bryant would cost less than Marshall or Boldin, and he doesn't have to be a #1."

If we had gotten the same Matt Moore who played so well at the end of last year I would still not want McNabb. If I had known Moore was a flash in the pan then I would have wanted a veteran QB for this year. I wanted Jason Campbell before Moore started lighting it up. He does not seem to be doing anything in Oakland though, but then again it is Oakland.

We do not have to have a great QB to win games but we do need one who is efficient and does not turn the ball over a lot.
