You mean what position is very rich in talent that we can wait until later rounds and still get a starter within a year?

no. Which position provides the best draft day bargain?

it's right there, in the poll and everything.

anyway, just in general. Doesn't have to be this year.

I say running back, just because you can often get a returner out of that deal too. It's close between that and corner. Offensive guard and interior defensive linemen can step in and perform, but they usually can't contribute on special teams. Running backs and defensive backs contribute in that phase immediately.

With this in mind QB shouldn't be an option. Backup QBs don't even act as the holder much anymore

Linebackers ought to be in the mix. They play special teams and in a pinch (see Jason Kyle) are long snappers

linebackers don't get tons in free agency, even the best ones. Jon Beason won't get much more than half what Julius Peppers got. And he's a better player. But I'll add it to the poll.

Definitely agree with RB. FA RB contracts can still be high, even though they're rarely as productive. You can find starters late, you seem to get high value out of higher picks, and young backs are just that much more productive than older ones. And that's without the special teams aspect, or the added receiving benefit.

I threw QB in just from the aspect of being able to find a potential starter after the first round. Any QB playing on a non-first round rookie contract is generally a bargain. But, they're all risky and there's a low return on value.

Even first round OL seem to be a better value than similar FA. You can seem to find a starting lineman in any round if you're looking for a roleplayer.

I'll go with RB. It for damned sure not WR's. They tend to be overpaid, over rated, and over hyped. QB is many times a bargain with all the lower draft picks that are playing.

You can get good value at WR in the later rounds, because those guys can play gunner and/or return kicks. Taking them early is definitely hit or miss. You draft a top prospect who doesn't have any versatility, and he shits the bed in the NFL, then you're pretty much fucked. It becomes a complete waste of money and roster space.

I remember Carlos Rogers running down kicks in his senior year. I thought it said a lot about him.

I dunno. I mean, a later round guy I'd expect to want to do all he could to compete, and a Ted Ginn seems to be staying afloat on returns (same with Reggie Bush, who may as well be a WR at this point), but to me, they're exceptions.

You could say with DL costs going up as they have, that it's grown much greater than the rookie payscale, so if you assume (wrongly most times) that highest pay = greatest production and that highest pick = greatest talent, and that it's linear downward, that rookie DL are a better value, but that's obviously a lot of assumption to make.
