There just hasn't been much activity, league wide. There's been a couple of big trades, a few good free agent signings, but when you see older guys being the "big splashes", it sort of tells you where the league is right now.

The yearly Gloom and Doom thread

Kris Jenkins is gone the team is down the toilet
    Minter retires defense is screwed
Get rid of Gamble ,Lucas is way better Gamble is weak
    Witherspoon is gone were Doomed
Morgan is done ,never be able to replace him
    Peppers left us Its over
Jake the 35 yr old Q B with the Int problem is gone the sky is falli

Yes! MATT MOORE is the QB

A young inexperienced QB according to most
But a QB that had more starts than JAKE ,before he became a starter

JAKE rode the pines for years ,even in Europe he backed up WARNER

A Serviceable Q B ,that became the future

    INTERESTING!

Yes Panthers have Changes and got rid of aging players with big contracts.

Yes Panthers have gone younger / But every Vet was young at one time .

How does anyone know what the young one's can do till they hit the field

Most are still upset that the VET'S they hate to lose so bad.
Broke one off in them last season.

Youth brings players not set in their stubborn ways yet .

Until Moore shows me something else, I see no reason why he can`t be the future in Charlotte. The Panthers have won more than they have lost with him starting as qb.(I think.)

I think the team will be exciting to watch and I could easily see people getting behind them for support.

B&B, as usual, provided some pretty accurate analysis.

You don't see a "feast" of free-agent activity going on with many teams at all. In fact, think of some of the names that remain on the market:

    Jason Taylor
    Keith Bulluck
    Muhsin Muhammad
    Jevon Kearse
    Ladell Betts
    Brian Westbrook

There are more--many more. Some of these guys have little left in the tank, but the FA cycle is much different this year, for the obvious labor-related reasons.

I think June 1 will bring some interesting transactions to the forefront. I would not be surprised to see Carolina make a play for Greg Ellis, Darren Howard, Kenny Peterson, etc., to supplement the defensive line. Raheem Brock is still available.

As one analyst put it the other night, there are still an abundant number of quality players, some starters, available late in the game.

I said it last week, and will say it again. You stay healthy, you win. You don't, your odds work against you. This is not rocket science. Last season was one of the unhealthiest seasons in franchise history.

Other than that, let's focus on running the ball, setting up play action, and hoping Jarrett can continue his momentum from the end of last year.

Let me advance my point by saying I have doubts about 2010, like many others. Here are my "football" concerns:

    • The 20-30 "impact plays" per season you lose with Peppers moving on. That will have to be replaced by committee, and I don't see us with adequate playmakers collectively to do that. So, you will see a drop in those "impact" (or as Monte Kiffin once called them: "Splash") plays.
    • Quarterback: Matt Moore looked very strong in his starts. The Patriots game, given the environment, opponent and weather, was a tough one, but he hung in there, probably better than anyone else on the roster would have. We've seen some pretty shitty preseason throws/decisions from Moore in the past, so it's crucial that he gets off to a sharp start.
    • Recievers: Williamson is gone. Who knows how much that impacts things, but it can't really help. Moose may come back--if he does, great, more so for run blocking and intermediate routes. Jarrett can play, but he has to show consistency and make it happen. Maybe Big-Dick Tyke can get in his ear and transform something. Kenny Moore, I do like. Good hands, good routes. I could see Davidson, who takes entirely too much heat around here, using Goodson in the slot or wide in packages. We did it vs. Minny and vs. NYG, with some success.
    • Special Teams: we fired, some would say, the scapegoat--Crossman, and replaced him with a more inexperienced apprentice. Again, I don't know if would have done us any good to shell out big bucks for Bobby April or Al Everest, but I am very pleased that we signed Wallace Wright and Marcus Hudson, both viable special teams contributors. Apparently, Wright is dominant on an Osgood/Hankton level, so that's encouraging. Lloyd--whatever. He was sucking ass late in the season.
All I can tell you is this: In Meeks, I Trust. I am a believer in the man, and I saw him transform that entire defense to a cohesive unit late in the year. With Peppers gone, that makes his job harder. But I see this defense, with a healthy T-Davis, Beason, Johnson Inside, EB, and a fairly consistent secondary, ranking well in pass defense, takeaways, and points allowed. I think we'll get gashed on the run, particularly with our schedule, but that's ok. We measure the damn game in points.

I think 2010 is an opportunity, not a sacrifice. It's 2011 that's got me depressed.

Just out of curiosity what do you think should've been done at QB? Moore was probably the best or close to it out there RFA or UFA and when you look at what Seattle just gave up (both in picks and cash) for a guy with NO live-fire nfl experience Moore looks pretty good.

Albert Haynesworth is due a 21 million dollar bonus on April 1st and he has come out and said he is not looking forward to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense that Shannahan is going to run under Haslett's tutelage.
