Owners will be voting on this - applies to playoffs only.

    1) Coin toss.
    2) If receiving team kicks FG, opposing team gets ball.
    3) If opposing team scores a TD, game over.
    4) If opposing team kicks a FG, then next score wins.

They need to make it the same rules as in college. Would be a lot more exciting, and fair. But I'd be OK with it the way they're proposing, as opposed to sudden death. I think it ought to be for regular season games as well.

And if it goes to OT, they re-open the beer concessions. :dunce:

Just have it end in a tie, I'm tired of this argument and there is no rule to make everyone happy.

Of course teams could play defense with the current rules and give both teams a chance.

Ref choice #4, that's saying that the opposing team would get zero points for the FG and would have to kick off.

Are there not more sensible ways to determine who gets the ball first?

Just give it to the team that scored last. If a team blows a lead, force them to start overtime on defense. They had their first chance in regulation and they fucked it up. If the game is scoreless, just give it to team with the better record.

There are a number of "fair" ways that you could do this, and still keep the sudden death format.

Just guarantee each team gets to return a KO or punt (edit: change that to each team gets minimum one possession, whether via missed FG, turnover, punt or kickoff after a score). If tied after that, sudden death. That would cut out one possession overtimes, which is the unfair part of current OT format.
