You don't trade away your playmakers unless you can replace them. You can have a whole roster of mediocre players that won't contribute as much as your playmaker does. Right now, we only have 2 playmakers, Smith and Williams. Stewart might be, but we'll have to see if he can stay healthy.

agree with all of the above . .. Smith will be costing roughly 7 mil a year through 2012. We would have him this year at full 100% Smitty then nothing in 2011 (because no one will be taking the field) then a 32 year old version of Smitty in 2012 whose agent will likely hard-ball like Carey did with peppers. . . and we will end up getting nothing. If our guys think there are enough pieces in place to contend THIS YEAR for a championship then by all means hold onto Smith, if not shop him. Their actions will tell the story and my guess is that they think right now that the panters will be contenders in 2010 . . . we'll see.

Rake makes another great point in that "what will Smitty's agent command at the next contract negotiation?" Panther FO needs to learn how to do business, been burned too much lately (ie Jake's extension, Pep $16mil last year). Today we sit here and have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in return for those 2 contract blunders.

Gotta learn when to buy, and when to sell.

Drafting a WR and expecting him to be worth a shit is a crap shoot at best. Look at Detroit and their track record. now if you can sign a free agent WR that has a proven track record then fine entertain offers discretely. This is all leaving out the fact we are not 100% sure if Moore is the answer at QB and the best WR not named Smith we currently have on the roster is Moore or Jarrett

We stll have the option to re-sign Moose, don't we? I haven't heard anything about trading him yet. Is he gone for sure?

even if we resign him I wouldn't want to go into a season with Moose as the #1 and a rookie or what we currently have as the starting WR's?

I wasn't suggesting getting rid of Smith, I want to keep him, just hoping we might still re-sign Moose.

I wouldn't want to lose Smith either, and I doubt they will do it. He's the heart and soul of this team, but he's got a couple of years left . .. maybe 3 tops (especially the way he plays). It would be conceding this season as a contender full tilt. However, assuming that there is no season in 2011, 2012 would open a new chapter with a relatively young nucleus cap number and a stronger FUTURE. Conceding the present (this season and possibly a bit of 2012) to strengthen the future . .. would Richardson and Co be progressive enough to do it? Probably not, but none of us guessed that he would condone what has happened so far this year, so anything is possible
