Tolbert replaces Williamson as Panthers WR coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers have hired Tyke Tolbert as receivers coach.

The move on Thursday comes three days after longtime assistant Richard Williamson announced his retirement from that position.

Tolbert had been in the same job with the Buffalo Bills for the past six seasons. The former LSU receiver also spent a year as receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals.

There is still one opening on coach John Fox’s staff. Special teams coach Danny Crossman hasn’t been replaced after being fired earlier this month.

    plus he's black

Has tutored Lee Evans to become one of the most prolific receivers in team history through his first five seasons…Evans has more receiving yards, is tied for the most receiving TDs and has the second-most receptions than any Bills receiver through his first five seasons…he also has six 70-plus yard TD receptions, a team record and the most in the NFL since 2000…WR Josh Reed posted his third 50-catch season in 2008 while Roscoe Parrish continues to be a threat to score any time he catches the ball

    connection?

Tolbert brings plenty of experience back to his alma mater where he played from 1988-1990. Tolbert coached wide receivers in the NFL at Detroit and Arizona before landing in Buffalo. Tyke Tolbert also coached on the college level at Louisiana-Monroe, Ohio University, Auburn, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Florida.

    what year? lol

CHARLOTTE -- The Panthers filled one of the two vacancies on their coaching staff Thursday, hiring Tyke Tolbert was wide receivers coach.
Tolbert replaces Richard Williamson, who coached the Panthers' wide receivers for all but one of their first 15 seasons, was offensive coordinator for the other (2001) and was the last remaining link to the original Panthers coaching staff.
Until this month, Tolbert had been as the Buffalo Bills' wide receivers coach for six seasons under three different head coaches (Mike Mularkey, Dick Jauron and Perry Fewell).
"Tyke's experience both as a player and coach provide him with a sound knowledge of the wide receiver position," head coach John Fox said. "He is a highly regarded coach and we think he will make a strong contribution to our offense."
Lee Evans was the Bills' most prolific pass-catcher under Tolbert's watch, notching a pair of 1,000-yard seasons in 2006 (1,017 yards) and 2008 (1,292 yards). Eric Moulds also had more than 1,000 yards (1,043) in Tolbert's first season with the Bills.
Tolbert came to the Bills after one year with the Arizona Cardinals (2003) and eight seasons in the college ranks, including stints with Ohio University (spring 1995), Louisiana-Monroe (1995-97), Auburn (1998), Louisiana-Lafayette (1999-2001) and Florida (2002). During Tolbert's single season in Arizona, he coached Anquan Boldin, who caught an NFL rookie record 101 passes for 1,377 yards and was the only rookie that year to make the Pro Bowl. Tolbert played wide receiver at LSU from 1988-90 and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the school.
