If we could sign him to a deal where he makes $5 million per year for the next five years but gets a huge roster bonus that counts all in the uncapped year then it might work out well for both of parties. I am not sure how big that bonus would need to be though. It would almost ensure he finishes his career as a panther. He could be a hall of famer by the time he is done, it would be nice to have one who played his whole career here. He has a long way to go but if he plays another five years at a high level he could make it.

say an extension for 6 years goes for about 17 million/year subtract 5 million from that multiply by 6 for your one time roster bonus of 72 million which is hilariously large (and would likely dwarf the guranteed money on a regular extension mind you) also all roster bonus count the year they are administered.

The story above says $15 per year, and I said 5 years not 6, so it would be $50 million not $72. Figure in the time value of money related to getting so much of it up front verses spreading out over five years and it probably drops to something like $35 million..... You take a forty million cap hit in the uncapped year and then have Peppers at $5 million per year for the next four years.

35 million is 15 million more than Rivers got in his new deal, that's an absurdly large amount of money up front. And really why would peppers take a contract that offers so little job security after year 1 the team could cut him at any time and stiff him on the rest of his salaries (which are guaranteed from week 1 of each season onward)

actually I'd think the complete opposite. Peppers at a cheaper yearly salary is more likely to stay even if his productivity starts to decline. It he's owed 20 mil in year 4 its more likely he's cut loose. Where as at $5 mil a year there's a better chance he continues to play.

I'm not sure Peppers would see it that way, which was my whole point.

or demand more money if he's still worth a crap. Athletes and their agents tend to forget signing bonus's and the frontloaded parts of their contract if they continue to play at a high level.

I realize that a $35 million bonus is crazy but an uncapped year makes things like this possible. $35 million up front and $5 per year for five years totals $60 million. He will get a deal worth that much somewhere. It may be backloaded though.
