I wouldn't say there was really a competition with Delhomme.

I'm talking about Moore being unable to beat McCown, and you can't say he earned the #2. He's played great now, but yeah, you have to earn a job too.

But camp competition will matter. This will happen. It shouldn't but it will.

    Like DeShaun over DeAngelo?

Not seeing that he didn't beat Delhomme or Mccown. Seems like that depth chart was set last spring.

Plus - if our staff awards jobs based on practice over game film, we need a new staff.

Plus plus - Moore's a fox/hurney wet dream qb. Undrafted, low expectations, low cap figure, low risk all around. Learned system for years with zero expectations, managed some low risk games, great in the huddle, and has a knack for hitting the deep ball. Perfect for the fox/henning/davidson offense, and a helluva lot like Delhomme in 2003. Although he seems more poised and accurate than even JD back then. Moore's the perfect fit, really.

Yeah, I wonder how much of a chance Moore has had to compete. When this staff brings in a guy that is their guy, that guy is given precedence over anyone else. I remember McCown being one of those players -- a guy they've tried to get in the past via FA and finally nabbed through a trade.

And really, McCown was probably better suited than Moore; He's had quite a bit experience starting and didn't completely suck when he was with Arizona. I think this staff puts a great deal of stock into past experience over potential, until that past experience just sucks out loud on the field (Peete, S. Davis, Foster, Lucas).

I still can't figure out why they yanked Peete so quickly and inserted Delhomme, then basically handed Jake the reigns after one half of a football game -- and then have basically done the opposite when a similar situation happened again in 2009 where Jake has been much more awful than Peete was (numerous times) and they've gone out of their way to make it seem as if Delhomme will be back in 2010 and in the mix.

    I just don't get it.

Yep. We gave up an extra yard, maybe two per carry because the backup didn't know his shit and we value keeping players like quarterbacks healthy. Deangelo would've been, at the absolute worst, a great third down back - he wasn't running well inside, but he could catch, he had burst, and he could bust a few plays even then. but he couldn't pass block, he didn't know his defenses or his schemes.

Tell me that doesn't matter. Even Deangelo says he wasn't taking it serious enough. So, do you take the player who works hard, knows his stuff, and has been successful (keep in mind Deshaun led the league in first down runs at the midpoint of 2007, the year we're talking about) or play the young kid and just hope he does everything he needs to do?

Or, in short, it's not a big secret that there were reasons that Deangelo wasn't playing more.

Maybe so. But tell me what Moore did over that time that was better. We watched four games of Moore in preseason being very underwhelming. Tell me if preseason is 'game film'. Face it - he didn't earn it. It doesn't mean he's not doing a great job right now.

It also doesn't mean we don't need another option - keep in mind that within the last 60 days, Delhomme had a 90 rating and a 110 rating game.

agreed. But, regardless of that, he'll probably have to defend his job at some point. He's been handed it twice and that's fine, but he's never beaten anyone for it.

I'd say they took far longer on Jake, but let's not give Fox too much credit for Peete-Delhomme. Peete was completely in effective in preseason. Weinke was actually the leader in preseason through three games in QB rating and looked better.

But Delhomme was almost as good, and then put up a perfect rating in the final game. 121 yards, 11 of 11, and I think 2 TDs.

Either way, Peete was our third best QB, and yet he was still starting. Not his best moment. We've actually feathered Moore into the offense much faster than we did in Fromunda that year.

Doesn't help make my point on Williams, but they're two specifically different things and I'm not trying to make the point that the Williams/Foster thing does. It's the opposite. I certainly hope we don't make the choice to keep Delhomme and if we do, I hope we do just hand Moore the job. I don't think he'd earn it, nor would the team be fast to say he did.

Ok, so if my math is correct, during the 5 game stretch, the passer rating for Moore is 104.93, which would place him 3rd in the league, if he had enough stats to qualify. Although is such a small sample and just 5 games, that's pretty damn nice.

I'll feel a lot better about Moore if he can come out and do it again next year. A lot of QB's light it up for a stretch, then after one offseason, def coordinators put on the tape, and "figure them out", and then said QB's are worthless. Derek Anderson and Tommy Maddox come to mind immediately, I'm sure there are others.

So, I'd like to see him in the mix next season, but I hope we dont hang all our hopes on him either.

"Moore's numbers for the season (which include mop-up time in earlier games against Philadelphia and Arizona): Eighty five-of-138 for 1,053 yards and eight touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 98.5. Moore's only interception in the five games he started came against Tampa Bay – 18 quarters ago."

7 QB's finished the season better than 98.5..

    Brees
    Rivers
    Favre
    Rodgers
    P Manning
    Schaub
    Roethlisberger

Tom Brady was 97.4, Romo 97.0, McNabb 94.5 to round out top 10...
