Got an estimate last night for windows. When I filed my taxes, I didn't take the 1st time home buyers money ($7500) but have decided to amend my tax return and take that interest free money from the government to put windows on the back side of the house. I think I have the original windows on the back of the house - house was built in 1956 - and they have awnings on them. I hate the awnings and I'm side of having to keep my house on 62 to be able to afford my gas/electric bills! This will help save me money and also I can use it as a tax credit for next year's taxes.

I'm sure I have no idea what I've gotten myself into - with installation and sorts. I just hope things go smoothly and within the next 2-3 months, I can have windows that I can actually open to get a cross breeze in my house!

I had a window replaced with a vinyl one ten years ago and the window itself cost $375. It opens totally from the inside; makes it easy to clean.

$7500 you can get a whole bunch of windows replaced.
    Get vinyl, you'll love'em. :)

I'm thinking about replacing windows but holding off due to costs. I have I think 13 windows plus two big ass bay windows. I'm thinking somewhere in the $10,000 range. The windows now are wood and I bet replacing with wood would be even more expensive.

Wood's more classy, you know, just knowing it's wood. But, I watched the guy replace mine, it didn't take more than an hour(my house was built in the late '30s). So, there's not much installation labor; you can paint the frame, any filler/trim he adds, yourself.

You might get away with $500, maybe $550 per for 13, because of quantity(I'm guesstimating inflation, and I only had one done.). I'm talking about a 'quality' window, too; it's double-paned.

I had new storm windows put on the rest, I wish I'd gone reg vinyl window. When the economy picks up I probably will.

Windows are easy to install so there's no reason to pay someone a bunch of money to do it. I replaced mine (16 windows) several years ago with vinyl, double pane with low e glass for something like $165 per window. They also swing in for cleaning from the inside. Saved a ton on heating and cooling bills too.

Hank Aaron said it best, “Don't dig in against Bob Gibson, he'll knock you down. Don't stare at him. He doesn't like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don't run too slow, don't run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don't charge the mound, because he's a Gold Glove boxer.
