It was funny seeing the Cassel to Bucs rumor come out yesterday.

Probably for a 2nd and a 2010 conditional pick. No way they gave up the 3 pick.

Patriots | Hold still... Cassel situation just got more complicated
    Sat, 28 Feb 2009 10:30:21 -0800

Updating previous reports, Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports a third, undisclosed team has entered the picture surrounding QB Matt Cassel. The trade parameters are in place between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, but it is not a definite yet that he is being shipped to Kansas City. Schefter says Cassel is being traded, to which team has yet to be determined.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Matt Cassel has been traded to the Chiefs.

The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss has confirmed the news, which is part of the trade sending Mike Vrabel West. There were rumors Cassel could be involved in a three-team swap, but it appears Kansas City will be his final destination. Compensation has not been announced, but it's safe to say the Tyler Thigpen era is over before it started. Cassel may not have excelled in every system, but he's set up for great long-term success under GM Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley, who will play to his strengths. A new contract is likely.

So: conspiracy theories I've heard recently -
    • the third team was us
    • We would get the 3 pick, the Pats would get Peppers and Gonzalez, the Chiefs would get Vrabel and Cassel
    • now the Pats have cap space and extra picks to deal with, so they'll trade for Peppers now. Vrabel going means they have the spot for Peppers open.
    • and of course, "now we need to trade for Tyler Thigpen"

Bring back all-white and they'll be set.

pFT says it's for their 2nd rounder, nothing conditional past that. Including Vrabel. Very inexpensive trade for these two guys.

Should be interesting to see how the fit is with KC, who has only one receiver worth a damn and an aging TE. Add in that Cassel seems to work so much better in shotgun and that's the death of Larry Johnson.

NFL Network said that the Chiefs talked with Denver about getting Cutler for Cassel and whatever else.

Why wouldn't the Patriots want more for Cassel and Vrabel than a 2nd round pick?

makes no sense. Hell I'd have done that, even with Cassel's shotgun quirk being a terrible fit for a team with two top RBs.

I think they could have easily gotten two 1st rounders out of the deal.
