Despite weeks of bluster from Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers regarding his desire to become an outside linebacker for a team that runs a 3-4 defense, Panthers tackle Jordan Gross thinks that Peppers could be persuaded to stay.
Gross made his remarks on Monday to Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan of Sirius NFL Radio’s Movin’ the Chains.
“I personally think that we need to do whatever we can to get a deal done to keep him in house,” Gross said. “Just what he does on the field and off the field, just kind of his image with the team and with the fans, it’s of the utmost importance that we keep him. I’ve spoken with him and he’s willing to leave, he’s willing to stay. He just kind of wants to see what the best situation is going to be for him.”
So what will it take to get Peppers to chance his stance?
“I texted with him back and forth a little bit these last few weeks and I just think he wants to find the right situation for him whatever that is,” Gross said. “They’ve kind of made a lot of changes on defense and our coaching staff and maybe that’s what he was looking for, or what. He makes his home in Carolina and he said he wants to live there when he’s done playing and I think it would be hard for him to leave if the situation was right.”
It remains to be seen whether Gross is onto something. If he is, maybe there’s still a way that the Panthers will keep Peppers for 2009, and beyond."

I have resigned myself to the fact that he wants out and now I am optimistic about finding the right trade.

Would I have preferred to keep Pep...sure, thats a no brainer to me, but I would rather lose without a player that didnt want to be here than to lose with one that hated it here. We've been down that road with Jenks and it wasnt very productive.
