then take the second third round pick, and use it on a qb...nate davis if he is still available..i am not concerned bout the wr positions..with jason carter, and jarrett, and maybe robinson all back thats plenty of targets

    1st round = jenkins cb
    2nd round = d line
    3rd round = d line
    3rd round = qb

So if we could, in theory, tag them both wouldn't we have to keep enough salary cap open for both Peppers @ 17 million and Gross @ 8.5 million?

2009 is NOT the final year of the current CBA. It is the final capped year, but there will be an uncapped year in 2010 if a new agreement isn't reached. After that, all hell breaks loose.

without getting into whether it's possible to tag two players this year, yes. We would have to have the appropriate money to hold the tags. I assume the idea is one player being a transition tag player, but we wouldn't transition (no compensation) Peppers, and I don't know that there's an advantage to transitioning Gross, who was a franchise player last year, since the tag would go up by a percentage either way.

Credit to you, then. It probably seeped into my brain and worked its way up the ladder, but it should be an interesting idea to consider. Obviously you have to make assumptions in that scenario, but it's not hard for me to believe that Gross might be more attractive to other teams.

You could well have had the same thought independently, anyone who is not a fan of giving Gross that kind of money is want to think of alternatives. I hope someone that matters has at least considered all the options but am not real confident.

If DE was a big need I'd be wary of making Peppers the highest paid in history, while paying dearly for the opportunity (partly because I disagree with you about his level of effort, partly because I disagree philosophically with having highest paid anything). Then add his public dissatisfaction; seems like it may be tough to get a good return.

Gross, at this time, appears to be a much safer long term investment IMO, and will not break the cap bank to the degree Peppers will. I think the possibility that he will bring back a better return is real enough to be considered.

Then throw in my feelings that even if Peppers stayed we'd need more, and there's no way we get it if we're trying to replace him too.... my bottom line comes out to we're not gonna be right in '09 whatever we do so let's do what's best long term.

I reiterate that I do not hate Gross, and that the thought of us having an OL 80% intact for multiple years to come is enough to warm my heart on a cold offseason night. I am not insisting that letting both guys walk is the answer, I don't know that there is a set right answer for this. Interesting to see what people thnk about it though.

if this thing does fall apart in th next 4 days, and gross doesn't sign a new deal, it will b interesting to see who they will franchise..or who they will franchise and trade. would peppers garner more in a trade than gross?? I har th eagles want Gross Bad,and would give up a 1st and a 4th for him.If Gross doesnt resign.. I say let him walk and get the picks for peppers. I could see Jeff Otah switching from right to left tackle where h played in college but his pass blocking skills would have to improve. I can also see Geoff Schwartz stpping in at right tackle this season. either way the panthers NEED to resign Hangartner...he could start on quite a few teams..and they need to resign jason kyle.

He doesn't really fit their type of OL.

This is a pretty circuitous way of getting McCown to start.

    I hear peepers....

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
How many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?
