I did some digging around, everybody knows that 2009 is the final season for the current CBA..and I have found out a way,and I am positive that the Panthers already know this , for them to tag BOTH Peppers and Gross. If the Panthers do not get Gross resigned this week by 2/19/09, they will have a predicament....who to tag? Franchise Peppers obviously....but since this is the last year of the current CBA, teams can tag 2 players. They cant franchise 2 , but they can franchise 1, then transition the other. How this works out for the Panthers is, it buys them time until July i believe, to resign Gross..instead of trying to get it done by 2/19/09...less than a week away. of course...if you do this, there is also the possibility of the " poison pill ". if all else fails, the Panthers CAN do this. I hope this isnt too complicated.

" Each Club can also designate one UFA or RFA as a Transition Player. Additionally, (in the final year of the CBA) each club may, in lieu of designating a Franchise Player, designate an additional Transition Player during the same designation period as the Franchise Player designation period. Whew! What that means is that a team may elect to tag two players with the Transition tag or one Transition Player and one Franchise Player in the final capped year. Any Club that designates a Transition Player shall receive the Rights of First Refusal. In order to designate an UFA or RFA as a Transition Player, the team must tender the player a one year contract for the average of the ten largest prior year salaries for players at the position at which he played the most games during the prior year, or 120% of his prior year salary, whichever is greater. "

"A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation. Transition players can be signed from March 3 through July 22."

I hope the hole is big enough to bury your ass.

The CBA doesn't say "final capped year". It says "final League year".

I had the same thought several months ago, but we did some checking and confirmed that the Panthers can only slap one guy with either the franchise or transition tag this off-season. On a separate note, maybe a more interesting question is whether we could get better draft picks for Gross than Peppers. I know everyone has been thinking that we'd franchise Peppers to trade him, but a left tackle might actually be in more demand right now.

Would you give more picks for Gross than you would Peppers?

But what happens if we trade Gross and Peppers holds out. And where does that leave us next year when Peppers still wants out? We lose both guys technically.

Me? Fuck no. Peppers is underrated if anything, while Gross is overrated. But other teams might value Gross more than Peppers because LTs seem to be more scarce these days.

    Malapoo:
We're going to lose at least one guy without compensation anyway, unless Hurney caves and makes Gross the highest paid offensive lineman in the league. I'm just wondering if we might actually be able to get more picks for Gross than Peppers. I'm saying that I don't want to pay Gross what he'll justifiably demand, so I'm prepared to be without both.

Yeah, I posted that same thought last week or the week before and it drew no (or barely any) response.

Peppers' statements and cap charge from a tag put the team in a bad bargaining position so it's very possible Gross would bring more.

SOS I've been saying for over a year, but my opinion is that Gross is not worth the money he'll ask for so why not think along the lines of having a bunch of money to spend, along with the best compliment of picks in return?

in the final year of the current cba...which is the 2009 season, teams will be able to tag 2 players...not franchise both...but either 2 transition tags, or 1 transition and 1 franchise...imo...the ideal thing is resign gross, tag peppers and HOPE other teams or peppers dont call the panthrs bluff...trade him to ...mayb green bay for th 13th overall pick, and get a good corner like jenkins...and then a 3rd rounder as well..then 2nd round and 3rd round go defensive line...so top 3 picks all defense..richard marshall reminds me alot of ricky manning jr...great nickel back, but playing him in anything but the nickel he isnt ready. ricky manning jr. bolted from the panthers, started for the bears and got exposed
