The Bengals really shouldn't be basing their decisions on the Browns cheapness.

    yeah, my ambiguity, too.
I've heard the woman they have in the Bengals org is actually pretty sharp at this, but is held down by the rest of the nepotism (that I believe did help get her in, too). But they'll never really be good until they get past that and hire some football people.

Speaking of that, Cleveland seemed to be leading with the GM hire, and then suddenly hire Mangini. I don't understand, unless it was "we're going to try to hire Pioli, and if that doesn't work, then we'll hire our guy". Or maybe liking Pioli and having to wait, interviewing coaches in the meantime and seeing what they liked in Mangini, then checking with Pioli and him not having interest in being a part of it.

I don't get it. Though maybe he feels some urgency to get out now. Granted, if I were a supposedly promising coach I probably wouldn't touch it, but some of the driving force with guys whose careers are within the top 100 of a pool of hundreds of thousands is the ego to suggest being able to do anything given the chance. Maybe rightly so, but I still wouldn't touch it. I don't think that much of Garrett personally, and this year showed he isn't necessarily infalliable as it'd been suggested, but this would still seem like an odd move (plus the under-the-table guarantee you'd expect would come with that last Jones contract)

I'd read Mangini knew the job was his for a while now, and he already was picking staff. My guess is they wanted Mangini and tried to get Pioli on board, or Pioli's plan for HC (which reportedly was Ferentz) was something they didn't want a part of.

It's weird, the guy is sitting on the most talented team in the league waiting to be HC, but now takes on clandestine interviews to leave. That guarantee would be as good as Jones' word on anything else, the guy could be pushing Garrett to interviews so he doesn't have to pay him when he replaces him- which is pretty conspiracyish but just something to consider.

With all of these coaching changes, I'm stunned...no make that SHOCKED that no NFL franchise has contacted Collin. They must not have access to TBR or his fantasy newsletter.

Mike Greenburg said this morning and I tend to agree, if Mangini could have simply been a coordinator for a couple of seasons and had time to reflect on what went wrong in NY, then he might have made one heck of a HC later on.....but from one team to the next, especially the mess that is the Browns just doesnt seem like the best move for him.
