If he is going to be a premiere player for another five years then I am good with it even if it does break the bank. He just does not generate a lot of trust that he will do that. You hear stories about how he does not like the game and would rather play basketball. You see how he disappears at times. He is still playing under his rookie deal so he has not had that big pay day that top players get after their rookie deal expires. Once he does get that pay day will his questionable motivation cause him to under perform?

Obviously though if he leaves our defense gets significantly worse. We have no pass rush outside of him and he causes every offense we play to scheme for him. You an not replace a guy like him (when he is playing his best anyway). Even if we had a good pass rusher like Jared Allen that would not completely replace a motivated Peppers.

If I were Hurney I would probably sign him no matter what it cost just from a PR perspective it would really hurt the fan base if we let Peppers walk on the basis of not wanting to pay him market value. That is the path that led the Hornets out of town. It is not an easy slam dunk decision like extending Steve Smith was though.

Donate your brain to science. Not when you die, not twenty years from now, do it today. Find a lab, have them crack open your skull, and let them study your brain to see if you're some Neanderthal reject.

His cap hit for this year is $14 million but not all of that is salary, some of it is pro-rated bonus money. Does the guarantee you mention cover pro-rated bonus or only base salary?

we just got rid of a guy like that. We probably wouldn't. And his affinity for us would be geographical only.

But, neat to get named by him nonetheless. There's a point in which you could hope he wouldn't break it off in us, get paid huge, have a number of incidents, be divisive in the locker room, inevitably want to hold out for a new contract, and leave a huge trail of slime in his wake. I don't think that level of hope is realistic though.
