The scuttlebutt coming out of Iowa City is that Pioli already basically has the job and that he and Ferentz unofficially committed to one another last week. This is nothing that has been in print or on ESPN other than Mort mentioning the connection of the two being close friends.
A kid I know at the U of I is friends with a number of players and he said that the players have hinted at it without coming out and saying it. Plus, a number of Iowa commits have dropped recently...take all that for what it's worth.

Personally, I don't think Ferentz will go...YET. His son James is a RS Fresh at Iowa and his youngest is a HS Freshman. He's sated on numerous occasions that he will be in Iowa City til the kids were out of school and if the youngest becomes a Hawkeye as well, that would be 8 more years at least.
However, this might be a situation that could be too good to pass on. His post game comments today were less definitive than they have been in years past.

Hypothetically, if the Panthers not made the playoffs this year would Cowher changed that tone if the Panthers called?

    Jets say Shanahan not interested.

Looks like they're going to continue the panty-sniffing of regional teams better than they are and get Spagnuolo.

Has he run a 3-4 exclusively? I thought he sort of did a hybrid thing.

Ex-49ers coach Mike Nolan is the early frontrunner to serve as Green Bay's defensive coordinator in 2009. Nolan is reportedly already lining up his assistants. Nolan was at his best coordinating Baltimore's defense from 2001-2004 before flaming out in San Francisco. His main competition is thought to be current Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss and current Rams "interim" coach Jim Haslett.

Source: Mangini agrees to 4-year deal
    ESPN.com news services

The Cleveland Browns will hire former New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini as their new head coach, a sources told ESPN.

Mangini has agreed to four-year deal, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Michael Smith.

The 37-year-old Mangini began his NFL career in Cleveland. He started out as a Browns ball boy and was later a public relations intern. He has never forgotten his football roots. When the Jets played the Browns in recent seasons, Mangini bought a catered lunch of Italian food for Cleveland reporters.

Mangini was dismissed after the Jets collapsed by losing four of their final five games.

Mangini has ties to the Cleveland area. He is the brother-in-law of Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro.

Mangini's hiring could also lead to former head coach Romeo Crennel staying with the Browns, perhaps as their defensive coordinator. Crennel told owner Randy Lerner he was open to staying, depending on who was brought in to replace him. Crennel and Mangini worked as defensive assistants on Bill Belichick's staff in New England from 2001-2004.

Information from ESPN.com's Michael Smith and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Mangini looking at Bill Callahan as OC, if not the Jets QB coach (forgetting him name at the moment) likely to get the job.
