Last chance for Stabler to get in on the modern era list (and he shouldn't get in IMO), same for Kuechenburg. Some more big names this year. Bruce Smith is a slam dunk, plus you have Sharpe, Rod Woodson, and John Randle, with Cris Carter held over from last year. And our own Kevin Greene made it for the second year in a row.

I'm always amazed that a guy like Steve Tasker can make the semifinal list, but no pure safety can. No Atwater, no Darren Woodson, no Butler.

In bold, Carter, Bruce Smith, Rod Woodson, McDaniel, and Derrick Thomas would be my picks.

I'd like to see Wilson get in before he passes.
Smith is definitely in. Look at the gap between Smith and guys like Haley, Doleman, Dent, Greene. Thomas isn't far behind Smith, but the others aren't anywhere near him.

Carter could get in, but certainly no other skill players.

I'd like to see Ray Guy get in. His punting skills were second to none during his career. It seems like he averaged 3 or 4 more yds. per kick than most NFL punters in the 70's.

Tommy Davis in the 60s averaged over two yards more per punt through his career than Guy. Not in HOF. Gene Chandler over a yard more, kicked FGs and played a little HB. Not in HOF.

Guy was better than most in his era, but the idea that he was the Jim Brown of punters was more hype than fact IMO.

I'd rather see an every down player get in.

Some say Sharpe, and I'm sure he will eventually, but perhaps not this year. I don't think any TE, even Winslow, has ever got in on the first ballot.

I'd rather give the spot to Woodson. 2nd all time in non-offensive TDs, 3rd all time in INTs, 1st in INT return yards, 1st in INTs returned for TDs. He wasn't just tops for his position, he was a defender you built around.

Good stuff. Yeah, Woodson is clearly a Hall of Famer whether he gets in this year or not.

Woodson was the best defensive back I've ever seen play.

I didn't remember that.....thanks for the info. Chandler was kind of like George Blanda, who was a backup QB and kicker. Blanda did it until he was 48 years old, though.

I wonder why Guy was considered such a phenomenon in the 70's, when Davis had better stats....Must have been because there wasn't many comparable punters during that era.

Blanda also was a starting QB for the first two AFL champions, and put up some big numbers for the early Oilers team. He's in the HOF for that as much as his kicking prowess.

I have to disagree on Stabler-were he not a Raider hed already be in. I think there are times when the stats alone do not tell the whole story. I think there are too many historic, game changing plays in Stablers career for him not to be considered: Ghost to the post, Sea of Hands, Holy Roller
plays thet Stabler somehow some way got it done.

Shannon Sharpe was arguably and statisticly the greatest reciving TE of all time

    Woodson should be in

Dermotti Dawson also was a great o linman and a huge part of the Steelers offense for a long time

Kevin Greene's pass rush abilities as a LB are second only to LT IMO-also is the record holder for sacks among LBs

Roger Craig was the first Rb that i remember to really be a big part of the passing game leading up to guys like Marshall Faulk, Larry Centers and Priest Holmes

situational guys that should be in Tasker-game changing ST player
Haley was an unbelievable pass rusher
Lester Hayes should also be in but i think the Stickum and being a Raider will keep him out
